The fillies and mares face off over the Morphettville mile on Saturday in the 2017 Queen Of The South Stakes, betting tips and the latest odds on the Adelaide Group 2 found below.
There are already three scratchings from this year’s $275,000 Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) field and the updated odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have Amelie’s Star ($3.90) as the firming favourite.
Victoria’s leading horseman Darren Weir is in flying form after another successful assault at Warrnambool and could be in for more wins heading to South Australia for Robert Sangster Stakes Day.
He has a number of key chances across the card including the favourite in Queen Of The South Stakes betting, five-year-old Testa Rossa mare Amelie’s Star who comes off a second at Flemington over 1800m.
She drops in distance and has her second run at the track after the close fourth to Royal Rumble two back over 1600m on April 8, the same distance she races over on the weekend now hitting peak fitness.
Four of her rivals are also under $10 for the win in the Queen Of The South Stakes odds including Circular ($5) drawn a teat in barrier two with the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira booked to ride the John O’Shea-trained Group 3 winning four-year-old.
So can the Weir success continue in Adelaide on Saturday or is there an upset Queen Of The South Stakes result pending from the likes of Consommateur ($10) coming off back-to-back wins or Have Another Glass ($14) who has won her past four on the trot in South Australia?
From the draw with Moreira aboard think this Godolphin-raced Street Cry four-year-old will be hard to hold out. She’s yet to race at the track but has stellar form over the 1600m with three wins and a second from six starts over the distance to date. Won the Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) two back at Flemington with Moreira in the saddle before a last start sixth in the Sunline at Moonee Valley that she’s out to atone for in this.
Big price offered on this ultra-consistent Sue Jaensch-trained daughter of Domesday who has won six of her nine career runs including her past four straight. Notable rise in class, but has winning form up to 1550m so the distance is a non-issue. Carted 57.5kg to victory at Oakbank last time out and drops to 55kg for this. Drawn wide, but in a dwindling field can continue her impressive form and surprise at the odds.
Weir is flying and this mare should be peaking third-up at a track she’s now familiar at. Gets in well in the weights and will be finishing off very strongly. Race is more open than betting suggests, but she’s impossible to leave out of the top three.
