A stud career lies ahead for Melbourne trained sprinter Tivaci following his last to first win in the Group 1 $600,000 Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick today.
Tivaci defied the racing pattern on the day that has seen most of the winners coming from the front but Damien Oliver rode the Mike Moroney trained four year old in his usual racing style to come from last on the home turn to claim the winning trophy in the last few bounds.
Tivaci had plenty of support in the betting ring and firmed in late from $10 to run at $9 and was able to grab Le Romain ($4) in the shadows of the post just as the Kris Lees trained galloper looked the likely winner.
The Mick Bell trained Jungle Edge ($13) ran another brave race and after setting the pace battled on to fill third spot.
Moroney said that he would have to discuss the immediate future of Tivaci with his owners to see if the High Chaparral stallion races on into the Brisbane Winter Carnival or is retired immediately.
“The win is very timely as he might got to stud so we will have a bit of a meeting now whether we race on or he goes now,” Moroney said.
“That will be a big boost for him. He is the fastest son of High Chaparral, probably in the world I would think so. He is by a great sire and has proved to be a great sire of sires too.”
Moroney said he felt fairly confident going into the All Aged Stakes today after Tivaci galloped brilliantly in his lead up during the week.
“I was really confident with him during the week. I stayed back and watched his gallop here Wednesday on the course proper and he galloped terrific,” Moroney said.
The $3.70 favourite English was given a sweet run by Blake Shin but after looming up in the straight faded over the concluding stages to finish sixth.
