The 2017 Magic Millions Sprint is next on the agenda for Patrick Payne’s smart first-up flyer Husson Eagle who won the Doveton Stakes at Ladbrokes Park in fine fashion on Zipping Classic Day.
It was a real family affair for this springs edition of the $120,000 Listed OTI Racing Doveton Stakes (1000m), Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne riding Husson Eagle to victory for her brother.
“He’s a beautiful little horse,” Payne said post-win.
“He gives you 120% every time he goes out there.
“I’m so wrapped to get the job done for Patrick and I’m really proud of this little horse.”
A $40,000 purchase, the now five-year-old Husson gelding took his career prize money up over $900,000 with his Black-Type win at Sandown.
He also continued his gun first-up record that, after the Doveton Stakes results, sits at three wins and a second from five resuming runs.
Posting his first factory since last Magic Millions Carnival at the Gold Coast back in January, Husson Eagle ($9.50) was given a lovely ride in Saturday’s handicap sprint by Payne.
The field was led by the likes of Jungle Eagle and Bullpit out wide on the course, while the Lindsay Park-trained Magnus mare Miss Promiscuity was also up on the pace early.
There were plenty of chances in the closing stages of the race including Miss Promiscuity ($7.50) up in front, but she was claimed late when Husson Eagle hit the lead 50m from the line holding his position to win by a length.
Miss Promiscuity was brave in defeat lasting for second from the front, while the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Rock ‘N’ Gold ($14) finished third.
Part-owner Joe O’Neill confirmed plans to head to the Gold Coast this January for a title defence with Husson Eagle in the $1 million Magic Millions Sprint (1100m).
“We’ll go to the Gold Coast for the million dollar race now during Magic Millions,” he said.
