2016 Coolmore Stud Stakes Tips & Odds Update

There is still plenty of depth in the Coolmore Stud Stakes 2016 field and betting markets after the scratching of Capitalist, tips and an odds update for the Derby Day sprint showdown found below.

Set to run as Flemington Race 5 at 2:25pm (AEDT), this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) lost one from the line-up when Capitalist came out due to a stone bruise.

That leaves nine three-year-olds to do battle down the famous Flemington straight including the Mick Price-trained favourite Extreme Choice ($3.10).

He remains the market mover but is on the ease slightly to back-up from a Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) win at weight-for-age and win second-up facing a field of his own kind this weekend.

The Blue Diamond winner over this distance as a two-year-old gets things his way in barrier three and he just needs to handle his first look at Flemington to take his record to five wins from six starts.

Money is coming in the Coolmore Stud Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au meanwhile for the John O’Shea-trained Sydney raider Astern ($3.90 into $3.40).

Godolphin’s flyer is capable of running blistering late sectional times and his Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) win two back suggests he’ll handle the tough ‘straight six’ this weekend.

Last time out he was runner-up to fellow Coolmore rival Russian Revolution in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m), and that form could well stack-up in Melbourne on Saturday.

So will the two best in betting run the Coolmore Stud Stakes quinella or is the value in the undefeated Roman Consul Stakes winner Russian Revolution ($10) or another double-figure fancy to score the upset?

Our 2016 Coolmore Stud Stakes Trifecta Tip is #6 Russian Revolution from #2 Extreme Choice and #4 Flying Artie

1st

#6 Russian Revolution ($10)

Tipping this Peter & Paul Snowden-trained son of Snitzel to retain his undefeated status and win his fifth race in as many career starts. Has won the Melbourne way of going taking out the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) back in August before the Roman Consul success at Randwick on October 1. The past three Coolmore winners come out of that race including two to do the double. Snowden lost Capitalist, but this fella is likely going better anyway to hand his trainer a second win after Peter won for Darley with Sepoy (2011). Odds don’t suggest he’ll match the top three, but has upside and enough class to challenge.

2nd

#2 Extreme Choice ($3.10)

The one to beat for sure, and favourites have a good record winning five times in the past 10 years. Beat the older sprinters in the Moir and doesn’t have to do much improving to handle these rivals. Is a dual Group 1 winner, has only lost once (in the Golden Slipper) and Flemington should suit. Big chance for the punters playing at home.

3rd

#4 Flying Artie ($11)

Price’s other runner finished second to his stablemate in the Blue Diamond and ran third in the Slipper before returning at Caulfield on October 12 to win the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m). This is his gun distance, he is ultra-consistent and gets the rails run with Hugh Bowman aboard. Can follow the stablemate two on his outside and finish in the money.
