Sheidel has produced a gutsy effort to win the Group 3 Cape Grim Beef Steaks (1200m) at Caulfield Racecourse this afternoon.
Sheidel has returned to racing in typically slick form this time, and the mare did not surrender her positon on the top line of Cape Grim Beef Steaks betting markets all week.
Jockey James McDonald allowed the mare to stride forward after jumping well and immediately took up the pace, sitting outside Lake Como and Silent Sedition over the back straight and approaching the bend.
Offered a clear line upon arriving at the final straight, Sheidel locked in a fierce sprint battle with four-year-old Silent Sedition but managed to pull a head clear by the time they found the line.
McDonald only picked up the ride on Sheidel this week, and was thrilled to deliver Lindsay Park their third win on 2016 Caulfield Guineas Day.
“She gave me a brilliant ride,” McDonald said.
“We travelled well outside the lead and she’s a very honest, capable mare that’s in great form and it’s a privilege to ride for David Hayes and his team.
“Obviously it’s a positive being in the first few and she has that ability to put herself into races. No excuses and she got the job done well.”
Hayes was pleased with Sheidel’s performance for success in the Cape Grim Beef Steaks and revealed that the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in a fortnight could figure as her next point of call.
“She’s been running at black type level for more than half of her runs, so she’s going to be a great broodmare,” Hayes said.
“We’ll hold a nomination in the Manikato, because she’s done everything but win a Group 1. She got beaten an inch in the Robert Sangster.
“We’d love to win a Group 1 with her, but she’s probably got to go into the big races now.
“We’ll see how she pulls up and make a decision, but maybe the Manikato.”
A former Perth galloper, Sheidel has posted an impressive thirteen wins and five minors through twenty-three career starts, after being crowned the Cape Grim Beef Steaks winner this afternoon.
