Capacity 2016 Scone Cup Field Released

A capacity field of provincial stayers will face off in Friday’s Scone Cup 2016, the final acceptances and weights led by the Fred Cowell-trained Mighty Lucky.

Suffering an early blow with a wide gate 14 draw for this year’s $200,000 Listed Emirates Park Scone Cup (1600m), Casino Prince six-year-old Mighty Lucky could come into gate 10 if the four emergencies all fail to gain a start in the capacity 16-runner line-up.

Chris O’Brien is booked to continue his association with the 60kg top weight, Mighty Lucky having won the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick on Boxing Day.

He won at the same track again first-up on April 16 over 1400m before a brave last start second when a half-length off the winner in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) on April 30 carrying 58kg.

In the Hawkesbury Cup the Chris Waller-trained Amovatio carried 56.5kg to victory from barrier 15 of 16 and chases back-to-back wins in the Scone Cup this week.

The Al Maher five-year-old rises to 59.5kg on Friday, apprentice Rory Hutchings riding the in-form stayer from barrier two where he will have to work to stay out of trouble.

Waller has also accepted for the reigning Scone Cup winner Tales Of Grimm who Kerrin McEvoy is booked to ride on 54.5kg from gate 10, possibly into seven.

Last autumn the imported Distorted Humor gelding saluted with 54kg on his back leading up to a second in the Hawkesbury Cup when the races where run in the opposite order to this season.

A rising eight-year-old, Tales Of Grimm was seventh in this year’s Hawkesbury Cup defeated four lengths by his stablemate, the same position he finished in at Randwick before his Scone Cup success last year in a non-Black Type lead-up.

Last year’s Hawkesbury Cup winner Sons Of John is the other heaviest weighted Scone Cup hope this year, the Jason Attard-trained Oratorio five-year-old to carry 56.5kg from gate 12 with Jeff Penza in the saddle.

A Group 1 placegetter when third to superstar mare Winx in last October’s Epsom Handicap over a mile, Sons Of John is out to atone for his first-up 11th in a failed Hawkesbury Cup title defence late last month where he was still only defeated under five lengths.

The other best out of the Hawkesbury Cup running on Friday in the rematch is Mike Van Gestel’s Casino Prince mare, the third placed Casino Dancer.

She had 54kg on her back from a wide barrier 13 draw and goes up to 55.5kg in the Scone Cup.

Greg Ryan retains the ride from a far better barrier six jump, Casino Dancer chasing her first win since the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) at Sandown last November over Puccini.

Also drawn well and coming off a good lead-up is Brisbane galloper Bewhatyouwannabe in gate four on the 54kg minimum for trainer Robert Heathcote of Buffering fame.

In flying form, Fastnet Rock six-year-old Bewhatyouwannabe has won two of his past three starts including the Listed Tails Stakes (1600m) at the Sunshine Coast on April 23.

Other notable Scone Cup hopes include John O’Shea’s Hawkesbury Cup fifth placegetter Malice and the James Cummings-trained High Chaparral four-year-old High Midnight coming off back-to-back Rosehill wins.
