Tinto Draws Wide in 2015 Magic Millions Stayers Cup

A capacity field of 14 runners plus five emergencies has accepted for the Magic Millions Stayers Cup (1800m) at the Gold Coast this Saturday.

Headlining the field is the Rex Lipp-trained Tinto, who will have to overcome a start from the widest gate with Timothy Bell in the saddle as well as carrying the sole top weight of 59kg.

A winner of the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m), Tinto was spelled for five months following an end of the field finish in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm during the winter.

The four-year-old mare returned in-form following minor placings in the Listed Travel Associates Classic (1200m) and Listed Just Now Quality (1350m) at Doomben Racecourse before winning the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1625m) on December 31.

The only other runner carrying more than the 54kg minimum weight is Chris Waller’s Amovatio. The four-year-old gelding will carry 56.5kg but has the advantage of jumping from the other end of Tinto in barrier one.

Amovatio has finished in the first two in five of her six last starts, which includes winning the December Handicap (1550m) at Canterbury on December 27.

Trainer Liam Birchley leads the field with three runners in his care – Goldslick, Black Jet, and Royal Jester.

Six-year-old mare Gold Slick looks Birchley’s best chance after winning the Stuart James Memorial Handicap (1800m) on December 28 and just missing out on a placing in the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1600m) two weeks earlier. The mare will jump from barrier seven with Michael Cahill as hoop.

Black Jet will jump from barrier 12 while Royal Jester will start next to him in barrier 13.

Other horses set to run in the $200,000 feature race include Gai Waterhouse’s Danas Best, Tony Gollan’s Tornado Miss, and Kris LeesUnique.
