Classy mare Politeness has capped an impressive Spring Racing Carnival with a strong victory at Sandown this afternoon; charging home down the middle late to comfortably take out the Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1500m).
Jumping from the gates only fairly, the Street Sense mare settled off the pace of early leaders Judicial Rock, Shadow Of The Mist and Estonian Princess who charged clear of gates and set a noticeably quick tempo in transit.
Finding the final straight with plenty to do, Politeness gradually built in speed before exploding with 200m to run, finding runaway leader Judicial Rock with 100m to go and jogging clear to find the line two lengths ahead; Ava’s Delight running on for third.
Jockey Nick Hall delivered a perfectly-timed ride on Politeness in the 2014 Summoned Stakes and was thrilled to deliver owner Phil Sly a consolation victory following a frustrating run for seventh in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) last time out on November 1st.
“She’s a real talent this horse; I just think she really needs a clean run. Typically filly, doesn’t like anything going wrong,” Hall said.
“A big supporter of mine, Phil, and really disappointed last start when everything went wrong so fantastic to win this.”
Stable foreman for trainer Robert Smerdon, Stuart Webb was pleased with Politness’s performance in the 2014 Summoned Stakes and was quick to praise the riding efforts of Hall immediately after the race.
“She’s had the tag as the best horse in our place for a long, long time and what we saw in the autumn when she cantered to them from a long way off is what we were hoping to see in the Spring,”
“She’s a difficult one, she’s very one-dimensional and she doesn’t always fire when things don’t go her way, so it was just great to see her have good, clear galloping room and hit the line like that.
“Nick said last start at Flemington he had Craig Newitt on his outside, he said it was interruptions the whole way and said today he’d ran be three deep with cover and facing the breeze and have clear galloping room than be bunched up.”
Running fourth in both the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) first-up this time, Politeness placed a credible fifth in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) before her luckless run for seventh in the Myer Classic, leading into this afternoon’s consolation victory.
