Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Melbourne Cup is expected to stay with the Europeans in 2012, with a talented group of internationals all targeting the race.
There are nine European raiders in the 2012 Melbourne Cup, with the likes of Americain, Dunaden and Mount Athos amongst them.
According to the Timeform rating, European-bred runners will take out eight of the top ten positions, with Mount Athos claiming the elusive victory.
However, form expert Gary Crispe feels that the best chance of a locally trained success story is Green Moon.
Green Moon finished seventh in the Group 1 Cox Platelast start, despite being the betting favourite for the race.
While he was originally bred and raced in Europe, Green Moon has since found his way to Robert Hickmott’s stable.
“If he has fully recovered then he is much better placed under the handicap conditions,” Crispe said of Green Moon.
“At his previous start he won the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes over 2000m at Flemington from stablemate Seville.
“While the Cox Plate did not go to plan, this could be a different story.
“It will be his fifth run back from a spell, significant because he ran second in the Caulfield Cup last year in that state.”
Green Moon has won six of his 19 race starts and has earned more than $1.1 million in prize money during his horse racing career.
