Queen of the South Stakes Draws Full Field

While Sydney’s Royal Randwick comes to life this Saturday for Doncaster Mile Day, Allan Scott Park Morphettville in Adelaide will also be host to a top meeting headlined by the $175,000 Group 3 Queen of the South Stakes (1600m).

Lady Lynette will compete in the 2011 Sunline Stakes this Friday night

Lady Lynette is one of the top chances for the Queen of the South Stakes

The 2011 Queen of the South Stakes has attracted a capacity field of 16 fillies and mares plus three emergencies lead by the David and Scott Brunton-trained Lady Lynette.

Drawn well in barrier five for Saturday, six-year-old Lady Lynette has been in top form this season.

Two starts back she was unlucky to finish second to Nakaaya in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m).

After striking interference with winning jockey Craig Newitt striking Lady Lynette with his whip near the 1200m, her jockey Michael Guthrie lodged a protest but was dismissed.

Lady Lynette then ran third to Zedi Knight in the Listed Australasia Stakes (1440m) at Caulfield last Saturday and back up to the mile should be very competitive.

The other top fancy in the Queen of the South Stakes this year is Mick Price’s in-form Nakaaya who survived the Sunline Stakes protest to score a surprise win.

Also set to carry a topweight of 58.5kg, Nakaaya is coming off back-to-back wins in Melbourne and will jump from barrier seven with Craig Newitt aboard.

There is only one other last-start winner in the Queen of the South Stakes field with the John Thompson-trained Choisir mare Public Holiday coming off victory at this track and distance but has work to do after drawing wide with barrier 14 for Saturday.

Other consistent runners vying for a Group 2 win in the Queen of the South on Saturday include Majestic Music (barrier three) coming off a close fourth in the Sunline Stakes, Rubiton mare Ocean Challenger (barrier six), the Lee Freedman-trained Mont Fleuri (barrier 11) and Michael Moroney’s Platinum Passion who drew poorly with the far outside barrier 19.

Four-year-old Redoute’s Choice mare Platinum Passion has been in excellent form this prep, narrowly beaten by Pinker Pinker in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) at Flemington before running a brave third in the Sunline Stakes last-start from a wide barrier 12 start.

Meanwhile leading Victorian trainer Peter Moody will saddle up Tampiko in the Queen of the South Stakes, the Lonhro mare due to jump from barrier 15 with Ben Melham booked for the ride.

The former New Zealand-trained mare did well to run sixth in a 1523m handicap at Moonee Valley last start when heavily weighted with 60kg.

On Saturday Tampiko drops back to a more manageable 57kg.

The other Group feature on the Morphettville programme for Saturday is the $115,000 Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) where the likes of the Mark Kavanagh-trained Catapulted and Peter Snowden’s Pinwheel will face off.

The 2011 Panasonic Queen of the South Stakes is scheduled as Morphettville Race 7 and is due to jump at 4:13pm.
