2011 Blue Diamond Stakes Field Takes Shape

The 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes final field will be announced Tuesday February 22 at 9:00am (AEDST) followed by the Blue Diamond Stakes Barrier Draw which will be conducted two hours after the list of starters is released.

The $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) is the premier race for two-year-olds held in Melbourne each year and is the feature race at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday, February 26.

There are currently 59 juveniles vying for a spot in the capacity 16-starter Blue Diamond Stakes final field.

Sepoy is the odds-on favourite in the current Blue Diamond betting markets at Luxbet, Peter Snowden’s unbeaten colt paying $1.40.

Peter Moody, who earlier withdrew star filly and one of the top fancies One Last Dance from the Blue Diamond, has confirmed Golden Archer as a non-starter.

Golden Archer was not among the original entries for the $1 million showdown, Moody stating connections would not be paying the $55,000 late entry fee.

Instead Golden Archer will likely run in the $200,000 Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill this Saturday.

Moody however still has four two-year-olds as possible Blue Diamond runners with Hallowell Belle (18th), Metonymy (19th), Covered In Class (24th) and Eclair Desire (28th).

Hallowell Belle is the $9 second favourite behind Sepoy in the Luxbet Blue Diamond betting markets.

Other Blue Diamond Stakes entries that are not likely to be paid up for at final declaration stage tomorrow include the Lee Freedman-trained Masthead (3rd), John Thompson’s filly Motifs (16th) and the David Hayes-trained Eramor (9th).

The withdrawal of these runners high up the Blue Diamond Stakes order of entry will pave the way for horses further down the ballot to gain a start.

Freedman may also be represented by explosive youngster Atomic with connections still considering paying the late Blue Diamond entry fee this morning.

Atomic is the current third favourite at $11 in the early Blue Diamond betting markets at Luxbet after winning the Listed Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) on debut on February 9.
