After a sensational win in the Mackinnon Stakes at Victoria Derby Day today, Bart Cummings’ superstar So You Think is now the hot favourite to win the 2010 Melbourne Cup next Tuesday at Flemington.
So You Think made it five wins in succession with an incredible victory in the Mackinnon today, with bookies around the country acting accordingly and firming the High Chaparral four-year-old into the Melbourne Cup favourite paying around $3.50.
Doubts over So You Think’s ability to last the gruelling 3200m of the Melbourne Cup have now been squashed with jockey Steve Arnold convinced So You Think is a genuine stayer.
“I wasn’t positive about him running two miles, but I am now. He relaxed so well during the race and was very strong at the finish,” Arnold said of So You Think in the Mackinnon today.
Legendary trainer Bart Cummings is now on track to secure his record 13th Melbourne Cup win this spring, despite losing Dariana and Faint Perfume from his Cup contingent.
If So You Think makes it five straight Group 1 wins in the 150th Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, it will be Cummings’ third horse in two decades to win the Mackinnon Stakes / Melbourne Cup double along with Let’s Elope (1991) and Rogan Josh (1999).
The second favourite in the current Melbourne Cup markets is Shocking, who was not disgraced finishing sixth in the Mackinnon today.
