Moroney Targets Second Melbourne Cup Win with Monaco Consul & Divine Rebel

Flemington-based trainer Michael Moroney will have a two-prong assault on the 2010 Melbourne Cup as he prepares stable stars Monaco Consul and Divine Rebel for the feature Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival race.

Moroney is already a Melbourne Cup winning trainer having taken out the world’s richest handicap a decade ago with 2000 Melbourne Cup winner Brew, and has his sights firmly set on a second Cup victory for the 150th edition this spring.

Rising three-year-old Monaco Consul is coming off a promising autumn season having placed third in both the Group 1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) and the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.

The High Chaparral colt has already won over $1.26 million in prizemoney following his three career wins from 11 starts including their Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) win at last year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Monaco Consul will be nominated for both the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup on October 16 and the $6 million Melbourne Cup, Race 7 at Flemington on November 2, likely to resume racing on August 14 in the Group 2 JJ Liston Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Meanwhile, dual Sydney Cup second placegetter Divine Rebel is also in training for a 2010 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups campaign.

The Don Eduardo mare has won six of her 23 starts to date and despite having never won over a distance greater than 2,600m, proved her suitability for the testing 3,200m Melbourne Cup distance back in April when she was runner-up in the Sydney Cup for the second year in a row, this time to classy Zabeel mare and fellow Melbourne Cup hopeful Jessicabeel.
