Irish mare Profound Beauty will not be coming to Australia to race in this year’s Melbourne Cup.
The decision was made by the mare’s owners at Moyglare Stud who stated they did not want Profound Beauty to make the long trip from Ireland to Melbourne despite having no injury problems.
As the stud is intending on keeping the mare in training next year, it is believed the trip to Australia would be too much for the horse to cope with.
For trainer Dermot Weld, it is the end of this year’s Melbourne Cup campaign as he will not be represented in the $5.5 million race.
The two time winning trainer contacted Racing Victoria’s general manager of operations, Leigh Jordon to relay the devastating news.
The announcement comes as a shock as the horse’s owner only yesterday paid the $1450 second declaration fee and the five year old mare was due to go into quarantine on Thursday.
Profound Beauty ran fifth to Viewed in the 2008 Melbourne Cup and soon after went on a spell until June 27 this year when she won the Group 3 Curragh Cup.
She was the Melbourne Cup favourite until her disappointing fourth place in the Irish St Leger on September 12.
The new Melbourne Cup favourite is the 2007 Cup winner Efficient.
