2017 Adelaide Guineas Results: Vienna Miss $101 Upset

John Hyam enjoyed a massive upset Adelaide Guineas 2017 result on South Australian Derby Day with his roughie filly Vienna Miss holding on to defeat the odds-on favourite Petition in the Listed feature.

Last seen running ninth first-up in the Listed Nitschke Stakes (1400m) a fortnight back, Snitzel filly Vienna Miss jumped a $101 outsider in markets for Saturday’s $150,000 Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m).

In a bit of pre-race drama, the filly’s hoop Katelyn Mallyon spoke to doctors putting an even bigger query over her and the horse.

Passed to ride, Mallyon was quick out of the gates and had Vienna Miss settled nicely just off the pace set by the Michael Moroney-trained second favourite Milwaukee who won the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) two back.

Last seen running fifth behind subsequent Australasian Oaks winner Egg Tart over the mile at Flemington on Anzac Day, Milwaukee led the Adelaide Guineas field around while the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Petition was right back third and fourth last.

Heading into the home turn, nicely-bred Foxwedge filly Petition coming off back-to-back wins in Victoria including over 1400m at Flemington on April 25 had all the ground to make up giving chase eight lengths from the leader.

Milwaukee led into the straight and tried to kick away, while Petition was the widest runner going for home down the far outside winding-up late.

Vienna Miss was quick to tackle Milwaukee and hit the lead, holding on in a tight finish to score a huge upset over the odds-on favourite while Chapel City got up for third ridden home by Damien Oliver.
