2017 Doomben Cup Bid for Chance To Dance

A trip to Queensland for a Doomben Cup 2017 run next month is on the cards with imported Chance To Dance this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival before he eventually heads over to New Zealand.

The gelding is now prepared by the Matamata-based Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards after having previously been trained by Robert Hickmott for goliath Victorian owner Lloyd Williams.

A seven-year-old son of Teofilo originally from Ireland, Chance To Dance went around Royal Randwick last weekend in the abandoned $2 million Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m).

Mid-race the fall of the ill-fated Almoonqith forced the two mile classic to be declared a no race by stewards.

It was the first performance from Chance To Dance for the John Galvin-led Fortuna Syndicate who paid $260,000 for the galloper.

The feature has been rescheduled for Saturday April 22 and Chance To Dance, who joined Richards’ Sydney-based last Tuesday from Mt Macedon Lodge, is likely to be accepted into the Sydney Cup 2017 field a second time.

After that plans are to head north for $650,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) back down in distance on May 20 at Doomben Racecourse, before eventually heading to New Zealand.

Prior to last weekend’s Sydney run, Chance To Dance was last seen finishing a brave fourth beaten under three lengths by the winner Annus Mirabilis in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) on March 13 at Morphettville.

The horse is yet to post a stakes win in Australia, something connections hope to change in Brisbane next month.

“He’ll stay here and stay warm in the Queensland winter and then possibly head home a bit later in the spring,” co-trainer Richards told AAP.

Richards and Autridge enjoyed earlier Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival success with three-year-old Gingernuts winning the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on March 18.

The NZ Derby winning son of Iffraaj then failed to salute as the favourite at Randwick on April 1 in the Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m).

He ran just over three lengths back fifth behind the fellow Kiwi raider Jon Snow and is currently enjoying a brief stint in the paddock back home in New Zealand.

Plans are to return to Australia with Gingernuts targeting the riches of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival later in the year.

“I was happy how he pulled up [from the ATC Derby]. He bounced through it well,” Richards said.

“He can have a month in the paddock now then we’ll try and get him ready for Melbourne in the spring.”
