Winx is the Queen Elizabeth Stakes Winner 2017

Winx has now won seventeen straight races and is the second top prize money earning racehorse in Australia and New Zealand after doing what all the money said she would – dominate the 2017 Queen Elizabeth Stakes results.

Chris Waller’s superstar mare was at Black Caviar odds to continue her undefeated autumn campaign winning the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick and she didn’t disappoint.

“She makes me look like a genius,” a typically emotional Waller said post-win.

“It should be all about Winx.

“It’s very humbling. Indescribable really. She’s just dong great things.”

The five-year-old daughter of Street Cry made it seventeen wins on the trot on The Championships Day 2 and is now a 12-time Group 1 winner having amassed an incredible $12.77 million in prize money.

Only three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva ($14.52 million) sits above Winx in the prize money ranks now thanks to the latter’s $2.34 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes winning cheque.

Jockey Hugh Bowman continued his incredible association with the versatile weight-for-age star and had Winx settled just off the speed in fifth as the roughie No Doubt led the Queen Elizabeth field around in the early stages.

The John O’Shea-trained Hartnell punched up through the inside to sit second with The United States, second in the race last year, third on the outside.

It was the seventh encounter with the freak Winx for Hartnell, who was up closer on the speed today, and jockey James Doyle brought the Godolphin galloper off the fence mid-race putting The United States three deep.

Winx was inching closer as Doyle went forward and got to the front on Hartnell who was at his best and giving it everything he had to really challenge the mare.

Doyle really put the pressure on before the turn, making Winx sustain a longer sprint racing hard out for the final 600m.

“At the 600m I wasn’t as confident as I have been in the past, but I wouldn’t say I lacked confidence,” Bowman said.

“There wasn’t as much pressure…it was a pretty slowly run affair that developed into a bit of a sprint for home.”

The finishing burst came when Winx moved up on the outside of Hartnell, Bowman careful as ever not to get her near the rails, and she easily moved past her regular rival to charge home.

On the line Winx had over four lengths to spare over Hartnell, while the Kris Lees-trained Sense Of Occasion put in a terrific late run to round out the trifecta in third after the same placing in last weekend’s Doncaster Mile.

“I could really feel the crowds’ love for her,” Bowman said.

“She’s the ultimate professional and I love her.

“What a supreme athlete and what an honour.

“She just put it all out there. She’s such a special equine athlete and I’m so proud of her.”

Winx now heads to the paddock for a well-earned rest before coming back to Victoria for another Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival preparation.

She has won back-to-back editions of Australasia’s weight-for-age championship, the $3 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m), and will shoot for a third at Moonee Valley this October.

Kingston Town (1980-82) is the only horse to win three straight editions of the Cox Plate, but Winx is well-fancied in futures betting at Ladbrokes.com.au to join him.

Even before her Queen Elizabeth Stakes success Winx was under $2 at $1.75 in pre-nomination Cox Plate betting.
