2016 Myer Classic Second-Up for Abbey Marie

After an injury setback early in the spring the Michael Kent-trained Schweppes Oaks winner Abbey Marie is set to have just two runs this time in culminating with a shot at the Myer Classic 2016 during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The now four-year-old daughter of Redoute’s Choice is only very lightly raced, but is undefeated to date having won all three of her opening career runs as a filly during the autumn.

Her first foray into Black-Type racing came on May 7 at Morphettville on the back of two smart Melbourne wins over 1300m and 1440m respectively.

The Cranbourne-based Kent through the then three-year-old into the deep end in Adelaide, running Abbey Marie in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m).

She handled the challenge without a worry and enjoyed a quarter-length win over Silent Sedition in the South Australian classic.

A subsequent setback however has Kent fighting to get Abbey Marie back to full fitness in time to target the riches of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

“She had an abscess in her abdomen and it didn’t respond to antibiotics so we just wanted to be really proactive with her and sent her to hospital and she’s got over that really well and has had five weeks in the paddock,” Kent told Racing Victoria.

“We’re running out of time a little bit with her.”

All going well Kent plans to run Abbey Marie first-up on Caulfield Cup Day, October 15, in the $200,000 Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m).

Her only other scheduled spring assignment is two weeks later on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington Racecourse in the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).

“All being well she’ll resume in the Tristarc Stakes into the Myer and they’ll be her two runs for the spring,” Kent confirmed.

“It’s still a bit of a tight schedule but she’s coming along really well at the moment and if all things go well I think she’ll get there.

“She’ll probably have only the one jump-out so it’s a bit of an ask for her but there’s no other races for her at the end of the spring and I’m really keen to give her another race before the autumn.”

Two of the past four Myer Classic winners came off a lead-up run in the Tristarc Stakes with Appearance (7th in 2012) and Red Tracer (1st in 2013) who completed the double for Chris Waller.

Appearance was also the last four-year-old to beat home the older mares in the mile showdown.
