Talented two-year-old Weatherly has justified his big support from punters at Flemington this afternoon; producing a scintillating turn of foot to comfortably take out the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m).
Weatherly was allocated the wide barrier 16 for the Talindert Stakes earlier this week and appeared to be up against it from the outset this afternoon after missing the start.
Electing to stay on the outside rail as Want To Rock, Brittany and Call Me Tess held the pace inside the track, jockey Craig Williams allowed the Beneteau colt to stride forward before settling into a good tempo in transit.
Immediately responding when asked for an extra effort with 250m to run, Weatherly savaged the line for a comfortable one and a half length win over closest rival Conscious.
Trainer Paul Messara was understandably thrilled with Weatherly’s performance for success in the Talindert Stakes but revealed a decision is yet to be made as to whether or not he will back up in next weekend’s Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.
“He did a little bit wrong – was slow from the gates, had his head to the side and the horse next to him played up and that didn’t help us,” Messara said.
“But he showed a lot of class today, pure speed this horse and he’s pretty untapped at this point so pretty exciting going forward.
“He has a very high cruising speed and finds it pretty easy. Just delighted to be able to train this horse.”
Williams delivered a typically strong performance aboard Weatherly for success in the Talindert Stakes and believes the sky is the limited for the exciting colt.
“He was still a little bit awkward today,” Williams said.
“The horse outside him came in and got upset, and then he went to tell off the horse, wasn’t ready and came off slow again.
“I just let him rest, come down the middle with the other two. He’s pretty exciting.
“He’s just got that x-factor and could be pretty special. He’s a beautiful looking horse, he has great temperament and most important he’s got great ability.”
Punters who backed Weatherly to win the 2016 Talindert Stakes with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au have been paid out on generous $6.50 odds for success!
