2016 CF Orr Stakes Results: Suavito Returns to Win

Nigel Blackiston’s classy mare Suavito returned from a lengthy seven month let-up to score another elite level win thanks to a gun ride first-up at Caulfield in the CF Orr Stakes 2016.

The five-year-old daughter of Thorn Park hadn’t raced since her seventh in last year’s Doncaster Mile in Sydney, undergoing subsequent surgery to remove bone chips.

Blackiston had her spot-on for a sweet Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival return however in the year’s opening elite level – the $500,000 Group 1 Ladbrokes C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m).

She went out only as a $16 chance in CF Orr Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au with so long between runs, but her Caulfield record is outstanding as she has never finished out of the money at the track.

Suavito also flies fresh and did so again to post her fourth win from seven runs at Caulfield in her maiden look at the course since her Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) win last February, a race that is on the agenda again for her next-up on Blue Diamond Stakes Day, February 27.

Ridden by Luke Currie from the inside alley in the big 18-starter CF Orr Stakes field, Suavito had the prefect run in behind the speed set by Murray Baker’s returning Emirates Stakes winner Turn Me Loose.

The Kiwi led from Entirely Platinum, Suavito settled off them around sixth or seventh in running.

Second favourite, the Darren Weir-trained Lucky Hussler, was luckless early getting back and caught in traffic.

With 200m left to travel on the straight, Currie began his move on Suavito who was getting the clear run.

Off the perfect run she was too quick in the end, going up to go by Turn Me Loose ($3.80F) who had to work hard after being tardy to jump and then over-racing without enough left in the tank to feature in the finish.

On the line it was Suavito ($16) over late flyer Lucky Hussler ($4.60) while a photo for third went to the Phillip Stokes-trained 2014 Emirates Stakes winner Hucklebuck ($15) who was second-up after his Australian Stakes fourth at the Valley last month.

“There was a good speed on,” winning jockey Currie said.

“She travelled like she was going to be there somewhere in the end.

“She was really strong on the line.

“To come back and win a good one first-up is a big effort.”

Suavito continued the gun run of mares in the CF Orr Stakes in recent years joining Black Caviar (2012), Typhoon Tracy (2010-11) and Perfect Promise (2006) as the latest to beat home the boys in the weight-for-age autumn feature.

“When we drew barrier one I was confident she’d get a nice run early,” Blackiston said after the win.

“She’s such a tough and honest mare.

“She’ll go onto have a good campaign hopefully.

“I haven’t really wound her up as we’re heading to Sydney so we’ve taken it on quietly and are slowing building her up.

“She’s just got so much stronger.”

Blackiston confirmed plans to defend Suavito’s Futurity Stakes title at the end of the month shooting for a double recently achieved by Moment Of Change (2014), All Too Hard (2013) and Typhoon Tracy (2010).

“She’ll come back here and run in the Futurity (Stakes) and then likely go up to 2000 metres for the Australian Cup, or going to Sydney possibly for the Coolmore (Classic),” he said.

“We’ll have a look at what other races are around.”

The $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) runs at Flemington on March 12 followed by the $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) in Sydney at Rosehill Gardens on the same day for the fillies and mares.
