2015 Champagne Stakes Field Features Odyssey Moon

A well-below capacity field of just nine two-year-olds is accepted to face off in Saturday’s Champagne Stakes 2015 on All Aged Stakes Day in Sydney including Odyssey Moon coming via a second in the race’s traditional lead-up race.

Due to jump as Randwick Race 4 at 2:25pm (AEST), the $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) may have a small line-up but there are plenty of genuine contenders looking to take out the set weights classic for juveniles.

One of the sure to be favourites in the Champagne Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on both it and the All Aged Stakes on the weekend, is the Rodney Northam-trained Odyssey Moon.

Drawn in barrier five, which last produced a Champagne Stakes winner in Onemorenomore (2009), the Scone-based Snitzel colt has Damien Oliver staying on after the duo ran a close second to Pride Of Dubai in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

In the past 30 years 23 of the Champagne Stakes winners came via a run in Sydney’s Sires’ Produce Stakes including eight in the last decade.

Three of those eight completed the double with Helmet (2011), Pierro (2012) and Guelph (2013).

That form bodes well then for Odyssey Moon who is out over the mile for the first time on Saturday.

Another top fancy drawn in gate seven for jockey Tommy Berry, after his first winning ride in the classic, is Jason Warren’s in-form son of Star Witness The Barrister.

The smart colt comes off back-to-back wins and is looking to make it three on the trot after his emphatic two and a quarter length success in the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) over this track and distance just last Saturday.

The Barrister will be on the short back-up but proved himself over the mile and in the mud, which could both work in his favour this weekend as he looks to be the first Fernhill Handicap – Champagne Stakes double winner since Dracula (1998).

The other last start winner in the field is then the Gary Moore-trained Takedown with the outside barrier nine draw for his hoop Kerrin McEvoy to overcome.

Kerrin McEvoy rides Takedown in the Champagne Stakes on Saturday after his third win in the race since 2011

McEvoy is the most successful Champagne Stakes winning jockey in recent years having won two of the past four editions with the Peter Snowden-trained duo Helmet (2011) and Guelph (2013).

He stays on Moore’s Startum gelding after taking over for Jay Ford who rode the horse to victory in Canberra’s Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) two back to win the Group 3 Baillieu Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill last start on March 28.

The other major player is then the Peter Moody-trained filly Pasadena Girl drawn a treat in barrier four for Hugh Bowman who won the race in 2008 on another top filly, Samantha Miss.

The girls have a great recent Champagne Stakes record having won the past two editions of the mile showdown, Moody’s dual stakes winning daughter of Savabeel a top chance to do it again in 2015 on the back of her close fourth in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
