Mile to Suit Pasadena Girl in Champagne Stakes 2015

Premier Melbourne horseman Peter Moody is confident the step up to a mile will suit his progressive filly Pasadena Girl when the daughter of Savabeel races in Saturday’s 2015 Champagne Stakes at Royal Randwick.

There were just nine two-year-olds nominated for the $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the set weights clash to run as one of two Group 1s on the All Aged Stakes Day program on the weekend.

Among the headline entries for the juvenile’s classic are last Saturday’s impressive Fernhill Handicap winner The Barrister and Rodney Northam’s Snitzel colt Odyssey Moon.

Odyssey Moon comes off a close second to Blue Diamond winner Pride Of Dubai’s second Group 1 win in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 6.

The ATC Sires’ Produce has produced more Champagne Stakes winners than any other race including eight in the past 10 years.

It looks the form line to follow again going into the mile clash back at the track on Saturday.

Another top chance coming out of the Sires’ Produce this year is Moody’s Pasadena Girl who ran fourth in the race beaten just one and a quarter lengths.

Fillies have an ace recent record in the event with two winning in the past two years with Guelph (2013) and Go Indy Go (2014).

A winner of two of her three starts to date, Pasadena Girl kicked off her career with back-to-back black type Flemington wins this autumn including the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) on March 14.

That led into her Sydney debut in the Sires’ Produce where she handled the opposite way of racing without issue as well as the step up to 1400m.

Now Moody is confident again heading into the filly’s second Group 1 test at Randwick, sure she’ll appreciate the extra metres again going up to 1600m.

“The 1600m will be ideal for her,” Moody told The Daily Telegraph this week.

“She has done everything right since the Sires.

“We’ve got Hugh Bowman to ride her and she will take her place in the field.”

Bowman is after his second Champagne Stakes winning ride having partnered the Kris Lees-trained filly Samantha Miss (2008) to victory previously.

Moody meanwhile shoots for his maiden Champagne Stakes victory as well as his first win in the $400,000 Group 1 Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m) where he has nominated his retiring four-time Group 1 winner Dissident.

Fields for Sydney’s two Group 1 races are due out today and will be published right here at Races.com.au so stay tuned.

Don’t forget now is the time to open your online betting account with Ladbrokes.com.au who will be offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the All Aged Stakes on Saturday!
