Eight sprinters will line up at Royal Randwick Racecourse this Saturday in the Listed Razor Sharp (1200m), one of eight races making up Villiers Stakes Day.

With the track downgraded to the ‘heavy 8’ range this morning due to the amount of rainfall received over the past 48 hours, there’s no saying which horses will ultimately run and which will be late scratchings.

Our Boy Malachi remains the odds-on favourite in the Razor Sharp betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au at $1.85 but co-trainer John Hawkes warned yesterday that the gelding may not run if the track is heavy since he’s relatively untested on rain affected ground.

With more rain due to fall in Sydney later today and tomorrow, it’s almost certain that the Randwick track will be heavy if not soft.

#2 Dothraki ($3.70)

The Gerald Ryan-trained four-year-old gelding is one of the strongest chances to win the Razor Sharp, with a number of factors working in his favour. He was runner-up in the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) last time out, finishing just under two lengths off winner Our Boy Malachi. He has something Team Hawkes’ gelding doesn’t however – experience over rain affected tracks. Dothraki has finished in the first three both times he’s run on heavy ground. He’s an experienced sprinter that has finished in the first two his last three times out and will jump from barrier five with Blake Shinn in the saddle. Dothraki is also the current market mover of the betting market, seeing his price ease in from $4.

#1 Howmuchdoyouloveme ($10)

Con Karakatsanis’ six-year-old gelding is offering punters a great price to win the Razor Sharp after easing out from $9 to sit just outside the single figure market. While he hasn’t been seen in roughly six months after finishing second last in the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) in June, the gelding has won his two barrier trials in the past month and is set to jump from the inside gate. The gelding may be carrying the sole top weight of 59kg but it’s still up to two kilograms lighter than what he carried during the winter. Howmuchdoyouloveme also won his only start on heavy ground and also proved successful on soft tracks so is a good betting prospect.

#7 Testarhythm ($61)

For punters looking to make a serious buck in the Razor Sharp you can’t look past the Benjamin Smith-trained Testarhythm. With a fixed-odds win price of $61 or $11.80 to place, this gelding is a lucrative option for your trifecta. While he misfired in the Starlight Stakes last time out, Testarhythm did win two of his four starts on heavy tracks and finished in the first three in five of his six over soft ground. Considering Randwick’s recent weather downgrade, this is really a good statistic for a runner to have. The gelding will get a good start from barrier two with champion hoop Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle and will carry the minimum weight of 54kg.

While Our Boy Malachi has an impressive record of 15 wins from 17 starts and easily won the Starlight Stakes last time out, the fact that he is untested on heavy ground and may likely be scratched form the race has made the gelding too risky for us to tip.
