Mile Proves The Key For Firebolt’s Doomben Win

Firebolt has once again shown his erratic form but this time it was on the positive side after a very gutsy performance blitzed the field in the Lord Mayor’s Cup at Doomben

The New Zealand import jumped out by as much as five lengths off the front of the field and was well in front as they rounded the bend.

He never looked like being headed in the straight and crossed the line well clear of the next closest runner.

It was a fellow kiwi St Germaine that crossed the line second with a very impressive run making up ground along the rails late.

Tagus was third past the post and battled ok to hold off a late run from Snow Alert.

“It was a good win but the plan wasn’t to lead,” Hugh Bowman said.

“I nearly had him relaxed but he just spotted one on his outside and took off so I had no choice.

“He’s a big strong animal and once he got there I just tried to work with him instead of trying to rate him.”

Firebolt is no stranger to wins in Brisbane with two victories over the mile during last year’s carnival.

His form back home was horrible until a win at Te Rapa prior to bringing him across to Doomben.

He jumped as favourite last week in the Chairman’s Handicap but the 2020m distance found him out and he didn’t have enough in the tank and could only finish 10th.

The move to drop back to a mile proved to be a masterstroke and he repaid the faith shown by punters giving them a comfortable win as the favourite.

“I knew he wouldn’t stop. He’s big and strong and was coming back in trip,” Bowman said.

His career stats now show eight wins from 30 starts, five over this distance and a fair chunk on Aussie soil.
