Bivouac Leads 2019 Golden Rose Stakes Field of Eight Runners

It is a diminutive but top-class field of just eight three-year-olds engaged for Saturday’s Golden Rose Stakes 2019 in Sydney with Godolphin’s Run To The Rose champ Bivouac out to do the double from barrier six.

The highlight of the Rosehill Gardens card this weekend, the Group 1 $1 million De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose (1400m) runs as Race 7 at 4:05pm (AEST).

Of the eight final acceptors for the first seven-figure feature of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, it is classy Exceed And Excel colt Bivouac sitting top of the Golden Rose Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.

The James Cummings-trained youngster has a 50% winning strike rate over his eight-start career to date and has won two-from-three this campaign.

After finishing second as the beaten favourite at Rosehill in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) second-up on the back of a Caulfield Group 3 Vain Stakes victory, Bivouac returning to winning form last start.

The San Domenico was run on a Heavy (9) track and the up-and-comer relished firmer ground for his impressive two length victory in Rosehill’s Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) on September 14.

He is now out to do the double most recently completed by Astern (2016) and is at $3.10 and firming in the latest Golden Rose odds for Saturday.

Bivouac is out to do the Run To The Rose – Golden Rose double for the first time since Astern (2016)

The big danger at $3.90 drawn further out in barrier seven is the Team Hawkes-trained San Domenico Stakes winner Exceedance.

Jockey Tommy Berry continues his association on the fellow son of Exceed And Excel who was last seen running third in the Run To The Rose.

Occupying the third line of Golden Rose Stakes betting is the Chris Waller-trained Yes Yes Yes ($4.60) drawn a treat in barrier two with Nash Rawiller to ride second-up.

The Rubick colt was a Group 2 winner at Randwick in the autumn before his Golden Slipper seventh on a mud track.

He returned with Rawiller aboard in the Run To The Rose finishing second to Bivouac and looks set to improve second-up from the nice barrier on Saturday.

Waller has also accepted for stablemate Kubrick ($8.50) who gets the rails run in the Group 1 from barrier one.

James McDonald partners the Shoot To Win colt having also been aboard for the chestnut’s resuming fourth a fortnight back in the Run To The Rose.

The step-up to 1400m in the Golden Rose will boost Kubrick’s winning chances on the weekend with the galloper having finished a close second behind Prince Fawaz in Brisbane’s Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) over the mile during the winter.

Rounding out the single-figure fancies in Golden Rose betting 2019 is the undefeated Yao Dash ($8) in gate four for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott.

Smart Missile gelding Yao Dash brings into the Golden Rose race a varying form line and is as yet untested in stakes company.

On debut he caught the eye at Canterbury saluting in a 3YO colts & geldings’ maiden over 1200m by 3.5 lengths on August 21.

He then backed-up at Randwick on September 7 and handled the 1300m when beating Funstar in a Benchmark 72.

The form of that race was subsequently franked by Waller’s Adelaide filly Funstar who won the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m).

Rounding out the Golden Rose Stakes field are Group 1 Champagne Stakes winner Castelvecchio ($13), the other Waterhouse-Bott runner Dawn Passage ($26) who won the Rosebud two back, and Prince Fawaz ($34) who also holds a nomination for Friday night’s Group 2 $200,000 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at The Valley.
