Boom Time for Debutant Caulfield Cup 2017 Jockey

This Saturday jockey Cory Parish has his maiden ride in a Caulfield Cup field, Lindsay Park booking the Kiwi expat to ride Boom Time in the $3.15 million classic.

The David Hayes-led stable has four of the 17 horses in this weekend’s Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) field including the well-drawn lightweight Boom Time in barrier three carrying just 52kg.

It has been awhile between drinks for the Flying Spur entire who hasn’t won a race since a non-black type handicap over 2425m at Caulfield back in mid-April.

This campaign the six-year-old has been in solid form including a third to fellow Caulfield Cup hopeful Jon Snow in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) on September 29.

Last Saturday Parish, 28, jumped aboard Boom Time in the Group 2 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at the Caulfield Cup track / distance.

Carrying 56.5kg, the horse finished two and a half-lengths back fourth behind Lord Fandango, the Archie Alexander-trained winner also backing-up in the Caulfield Cup field this weekend.

“It was a super run from him [in the Herbert Power Stakes],” Parish told Racing Victoria on Wednesday.

“He was a bit keen, the pace was quite hot and he was still keen through it.

“If he can back up well, he’ll settle better on Saturday and finish off super.

“He’s got 52kg. I think he can [back up well] … he was the only horse last-start to be up on the pace and finish off well. And this way around is ideal for him.”

Parish retains the mount in the Group 1, his eighth ride for the stable, and just his second ever career ride at elite level.

His maiden Group 1 assignment was on triple-figure roughie Family Pride for Murray Pride in the 2014 South Australian Derby finishing 11th to Kushadasi in the Morphettville feature.

He is back in the spotlight on Caulfield Cup Day and is thrilled to be aboard Boom Time as Hayes chases his third win in the race following previous success with Fraar (1993) and Tawqeet (2006).

“It’d be an absolute thrill [to win a Caulfield Cup],” Parish said.

“I’ve been here [in Australia] coming up five years now, and I’ve been doing a lot of work with the Lindsay Park team.

“David owns the whole horse, so it’s a big privilege for him to put me on, I’m very happy.

“Obviously he has faith in me, which is awesome, so I just try and do my hard work and get the rewards for them.”

Boom Time is listed as a $51 outsider in the latest Caulfield Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, while the Herbert Power Stakes winner Lord Fandango is at $21 to do the double last completed by Master O’Reilly (2007).

Speaking Caulfield Cup tactics, Parish plans to do the early work to cross the rails-drawn stablemate Harlem (1) and race favourite Johannes Vermeer (2) to get to the inside.

“Barrier three’s ideal for him. It means I should be able to cross horses in barrier one and two quite easily, and there’s speed outside of me so it’s just a matter of what they want to do to where I can be,” he said.

The South Australian-trained mare Southern Speed (2011) was the last Caulfield Cup winner to jump from barrier three.

The other Lindsay Park Caulfield Cup horses in the mix are $126 roughie shot He’s Our Rokkii (Luke Nolen), the imported Ventura Storm (Damien Oliver) into $11 after the Turnbull Stakes second to Winx last start and the aforementioned recent Naturalism Stakes winner Harlem (Chad Schofield) quoted at $11 to be the first to salute from barrier one since 1941.
