The Everest 2017 Betting Moves: Vega Magic Firming Favourite

All the money in 2017 The Everest betting for the debut of the $10 million Restricted Sydney Spring Racing Carnival showpiece this afternoon at Royal Randwick is on the Lindsay Park-trained Vega Magic.

There are a dozen ace sprinters set to do battle in Randwick Race 8 this afternoon when the highly-anticipated $10 million The Everest (1200m) runs and one horse will take out an incredible $5.8 million winners’ cheque.

The Everest is now the world’s richest turf race and it is last start Memsie Stakes winner Vega Magic that the punters are coming for.

Drawn awkwardly in barrier 10, internationally performance jockey Craig Williams will need to work from the jump to get Lope De Vega five-year-old Vega Magic into a winning position.

A sprint specialist boasting nine wins from 12 starts over The Everest distance, the new favourite has been well-supported to add to that imposing record firming in from $6 to $4.80.

Vega Magic now heads The Everest odds having been freshened-up from his 1400m Memsie Stakes win at Caulfield back on September 2, and how that form line stacks up will be found out this afternoon.

The other best backed to win The Everest is the Hawkes Racing-trained Grey Flash Chautauqua ($5) chasing his first victory since making it an historic three straight TJ Smith Stakes win at the track / distance in the autumn.

The six-time Group 1 champion had no right to win that race based on his position at the top of the straight, but what he produced late was something truly special.

The Everest market mover and favourite Vega Magic has his first run at Randwick this afternoon

He is unplaced in his two lead-up Sydney runs this spring, but has been closing well late in his usual style, and is out to prove he can still run down the competition.

One time The Everest favourite She Will Reign meanwhile has drifted right out from $4.60 to $6.50 to continue her incredible run.

The Golden Slipper Stakes winning daughter of Manhattan Rain achieved an incredible feat first-up as a three-year-old on September 9 under the lights at The Valley coming from well back to take out the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m).

She is a flyer on the weight-for-age 51kg allocation, gets back from barrier two and will be charging home looking to continue the fairy tale.

It is a wide open affair in The Everest and a further two hopefuls sit under $10 to make history with a win.

The in-form Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Redzel ($7.50) hasn’t put a foot wrong since his close second in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) back in March.

The Snitzel gelding has won his four starts since, including Brisbane’s Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) during the winter, and has posted back-to-back Randwick victories this time in.

The latest was in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) on September 16 and he is out to show he isn’t vulnerable late over 1200m.

The last of the single-figure The Everest horses is the always-honest Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Group 1 winning mare English ($9).

The five-year-old daughter of Encosta De Lago was runner-up when run down late by Chautauqua in the TJ Smith Stakes, and has been good this campaign including the eye-catching second in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) on September 30.
