A dozen gallopers take to the Sunshine Coast track in Race 6 at 3:17pm (AEST) for the $175,000 Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) including two who are battling for favouritism in the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Narrow early favourite sitting top of the Caloundra Cup odds at $3.20 is Self Sense, the David Brideoake-trained six-year-old coming off an impressive seven length win in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m).

Despite rising from 54kg for that runaway July 17 success to 56kg in the Caloundra Cup weights, the bookies and punters still have Self Sense tipped to do the double.

Hot on his heels in the Caloundra Cup betting markets at $3.50 is Supply And Demand, an in-form Sydney raider from the Tulloch Lodge stables of Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott.

The progressive Sebring four-year-old comes off successive Rosehill wins in June over 1800m and 2000m respectively and sees the 2400m for the first time in the Caloundra Cup.

The other big player at $4.20 is the Darren Weir-trained mare Neverland who is out to improve on her last start sixth in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2200m).

A five-year-old daughter of Big Brown, Neverland has run second in the past two editions of the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) and should be improving off her Doomben run last time out.

So will the top three in the markets run the Caloundra Cup trifecta this winter or is there value to be found further down the odds in the likes of the 59.5kg top weight Benzini ($7) who is going as good as ever or War Baby ($16) on the quick seven day back-up?

Our 2017 Caloundra Cup Trifecta Tip is #4 Neverland from #7 War Baby and #2 Self Sense

1st

#4 Neverland ($4.20)

It has been a long time between drinks for this now Weir-trained mare who hasn’t won since November of 2015. That said, she’s been very well performed over the past year and a half in top company including her successive Perth Cup seconds over this distance. She’s was finishing well in the Brisbane Cup over 2200m and will enjoy the extra 2000m here. Gets in on the 54kg minimum, plenty of time to overcome the outside alley (12 of 12) and looks like she’ll enjoy the Caloundra track.

2nd

#7 War Baby ($16)

Going an all-mares quinella and this progressive five-year-old is going too good to ignore. Connections are striking while the iron is hot following her runaway 6.5 length Ipswich win over 2150m and the brave Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) third behind Rudy last weekend. On the short back-up but is flying, is well-weighted again and drawn a treat in gate two with Larry Cassidy continuing his association. The value.

3rd

#2 Self Sense ($3.20)

Ipswich Cup winner in impressive style and the money is coming in again for Saturday despite the rise in weights. A few are tipping against, but the six-year-old 40-start veteran has winning form over the mile and a half and was far from disgraced in the Morning Cup when 2.75 lengths off Tally four fourth over the distance in late March. Is improving each run, seven length margin on Benzini in the Ipswich Cup and ticks plenty of boxes.
