Trainer Chris Waller has earmarked the Group 1 $1m Epsom at Randwick over 1600m as a possible Spring Carnival target for Egg Tart who blew away her rivals to win the Group 1 $500,000 Treasury Brisbane Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben today.
Egg Tart ($3.10 favourite) made it six wins on the trot when Kerrin McEvoy brought the Sebring filly down the outside of the track in the straight to record a dominant win over the Darren Beadman trained filly Pygmy ($41) who came from last in the middle stages after jumping from the outside barrier in the sixteen horse field.
Egg Tart’s stablemate Oklahoma Girl ($9) was another filly running on at the finish and was able to fill third spot.
Waller has a done a tremendous job of keeping Egg Tart racing in peak form after not having raced for a month since winning the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Oaks (registered as Australasian Oaks) (2000m) at Morphettville on May 6.
The champion trainer believes that Egg Tart still has plenty of upside but has virtually ruled out a Caulfield – Melbourne Cups campaign in the Spring and will prepare her for the shorter feature races.
“I would say she will get ready for a race like The Epsom because you have to respect that the three year old fillies are still growing and developing,” Waller said.
“That is a big step those Cups horses but I like to take a more conservative approach and make sure she is there for a lot longer yet.”
“She has got a good record starting to unfold and I think the best is yet to come.”
“She is not furnished yet and has that sense of winning. Barrier draws and luck in running, she seems to take care of that side of it and a good result.”
“I just like horses winning consistently and winning by a big margin which she has done a few times. She switches off, her attitude in her training, life in general, she is a happy horse.”
Today’s Queensland Oaks win by Egg Tart was Waller’s second after he claimed the race with super mare Winx in 2015 when it was also run at Doomben while McEvoy also won his second Queensland Oaks trophy after scoring on Purple for trainer Peter Snowden in 2009.
