The marquee race at Randwick on Saturday features a quality line-up of the spring’s big name middle-distance gallopers and with plenty of Group 1 winners in the mix, Races.com.au have our full Chelmsford Stakes 2026 field preview, betting update and tips on the mile showdown.

A compact but classy field has gathered for this year’s important early spring form pointer with nine left in the line-up for the Group 2 $300,000 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) following the withdrawal of Attica who will instead contest the Tramway.

It’s a wide-open top half of the markets with a trio of runners battling for favouritism in Chelmsford Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Currently leading the charge at $2.70 and firming is the Chris Waller-trained Lindermann who defends his title and is out to be the first back-to-back Chelmsford Stakes winner since Hawkspur (2013-14).

Plenty of big money Chelmsford Stakes bets are rolling in for the Lonhro seven-year-old to improve second-up as he’s got a killer record at this stage of his preps (9:4-1-2).

Resuming he finished ninth at 60/1 behind his star stablemate Autumn Glow in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m), but he’ll be fitter for the run and relish the 1600m now.

He was 10th in the Winx last year before claiming the Chelmsford narrowly over the very good galloper Sir Delius so we know he’s capable.

While winless in the autumn his runs were full of merit including seconds in the Ranvet and Queen Elizabeth over 2000m, and the jockey aboard for those performances, Nash Rawiller, is back aboard on the weekend.

The wide draw shouldn’t trouble him too much, he’s is at his best when allowed to stride, and with his natural early speed he’s expected to cruise across, take up the lead and make his own luck.

A proven Randwick miler, he’ll handle give in the ground and has repeatedly shown he can absorb pressure when rolling along at his own tempo.

Following closely on the second line of betting at $3.50 is Waller’s multiple Group 1 winning mare Fangirl.

Waller’s training record in the Chelmsford is outstanding including eight wins since 2010 and the past two on the trot and the master horseman has opted to bypass the Tramway with Fangirl and instead send his champion mare back to her favourite assignment — the Randwick mile.

She has four elite levels on her CV and, while she hasn’t saluted since early autumn, her record at 1600m on this track is outstanding, and the stable clearly believes this is the right race to spark her back into form.

Her return in the Winx Stakes was below her usual standard, finishing tenth, but Fangirl has a long history of improving sharply second-up like Lindermann.

Even as an eight-year-old, she showed during the Brisbane winter that she remains highly competitive at the top level, producing a pair of excellent Group 1 runs — a close third in the Kingsford-Smith Cup and a strong fourth in the Stradbroke on testing ground.

The question heading into the Chelmsford is whether she has come up well enough this preparation to recapture her trademark late surge.

The conditions certainly play in her favour, she boasts a 10:4-1-2 record at the track and trip, and she’ll appreciate a genuine tempo if the leaders roll along early.

She may not be the explosive mare she once was, but she remains one of the most reliable performers in Sydney’s weight-for-age ranks — and the Chelmsford looks the perfect stage for her to rebound.

Hot on her tail at $3.60 Chelmsford Stakes odds is another grand old performer, Ceolwulf, for Joe Pride.

The six-year-old son of Tavistock steps back into the spotlight for the 2026 Chelmsford Stakes, and after a mixed campaign last time in, the talented gelding has shown enough first-up to suggest he’s ready to trend back in the right direction.

He wasn’t at his best across two autumn runs, but his return in the Winx was a clear improvement — finishing fifth on a slow track and holding his ground well enough to indicate he’s come back in better order this preparation.

The rise to the Randwick mile is exactly what he’s been waiting for like many of these, and Ceolwulf has always been more effective once he gets out to 1600m.

His second-up profile, while not flashy on paper, typically sees him take a meaningful step forward.

He’s drawn wide again, but that’s unlikely to be a disadvantage in a field of this size, and conditions are expected to suit.

Rounding out the single-figure fancies at $9 is then Green Spaces for Bjorn Baker.

The four-year-old Street Boss entire is being kept safe as he looks to build on his credible run fresh in the Winx at 100/1 when eighth in his campaign kick-off over an unsuitably short distance.

He’ll improve each run in building to longer-distanced spring targets as the reigning ATC Derby champion, is two-from-three over the 1600m and can finish somewhere in the top five or six now.

There’s also sure to be eyes on the now Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained The Euphrates at $18 for his debut run down under.

Formerly with ace Irish horseman Aidan O’Brien, the European expat is looking to put on a show ahead of tougher spring assignments with the Frankel gelding boasting some strong form lines from overseas including a game run for fourth in the Irish St Leger a couple of years ago.

His lead-up trials in Sydney have been promising, he’s been gelded now so has his focus and is drawn well for jockey Regan Bayliss so can surprise.

The 2026 Chelmsford Stakes is scheduled as Randwick Race 9 at 4:35pm (AEST) taking place as the penultimate event on the 10-race card this Saturday.
