The Group 1 options for the reigning Golden Slipper champion Guest House this spring have opened right up following the colt’s brilliant return to racing when smashing the race record fresh in the 2026 San Domenico Stakes results.

There is always plenty of chatter about how a Slipper winner will come back as a three-year-old, explaining the generous odds for the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained Home Affairs colt’s first-up assignment at Rosehill in the Group 3 $250,000 San Domenico Stakes (1100m).

The still untapped young star however was quick to silence the doubters, proving his big two-year-old campaign was no fluke with a 1.25 length victory to kick off his spring thanks to a gun ride by Zac Lloyd.

“That kid (Zac Lloyd), he just owns these races, doesn’t he. Just writes his own story,” co-trainer Mick Price said post-victory.

Third in the Blue Diamond before his upset Slipper success during the autumn, Guest House had trialled up well before his dominant San Domenico performance when taking the gap up the fence before charging home to put a good margin on the beaten favourite Blue Door and set a new race record of 1:02.41.

“Amazing, wasn’t it,” Price said.

“As I said in an interview, the people make up their own mind, the horse will write his own story and uh you know it was just an amazing win.

“He’s a very good horse, you might even think he’s improved from his (Golden) Slipper (win) to come out here over 1100 meters and do what he did, and he had to race so genuine, Blue Door was holding the fence.

“He (Lloyd) was on the right horse you know uh and if you’ve got the right motor and the right horse it’s a lot easier than if you’re not on the bridle isn’t it but geez, he’s a good colt.”

The Slipper form was further franked with the third placegetter Music Time also eye-catching fresh to round out the San Domenico Stakes trifecta at a double figure starting price.

Lloyd was also quick to credit Guest House’s performance describing it as a “perfect first-time run”.

“Yeah, good to see,” he said.

“His trials have been really good. I must say, I think everyone’s a little surprised how good that really was because we all thought he was progressing.

“He’s a big, robust colt. He’s only going to get better with every run he has. And for him to do that at 1100m, it’s very exciting. But yeah, good to have him back.

“I knew at the 400m, the way he was coping with that speed, he was just ready to go. And I needed a run, but I knew I had a very good horse underneath me, so I wasn’t rushing. Tommy (Berry on Blue Door) gave him enough room, and those horses, you give them a message, they’re straight in there.

“So, no, fantastic, and he’s actually done that quite comfortably. A perfect first-time run for him.”

Guest House has Group 1 options galore now including a likely run in the Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) back at the track on September 26 for which he’s now the $3.60 favourite to win through Ladbrokes.com.au.

2026 Golden Rose Stakes Odds

Price is hoping for a history-making campaign from the still progressive sprinter whose other potential elite level spring targets including the $20 million The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 17 and Flemington’s $2 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the famous ‘Straight Six’ at HQ on Derby Day (October 31).

Guest House also now sits at the top of futures Coolmore Stud Stakes 2026 betting at $4 through Ladbrokes.com.au and is being kept safe to early a slot in The Everest field and win at $15 (in from $51).

Considering the brilliance of his return, Price said that Guest House had the ability to perhaps even stretch out to a mile for the Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m), but that the focus was on the sprints.

“I didn’t want to run in the Golden Rose at run number three,” he explained.

“I want him in the zone for the three races that make his colt career, and that is the Golden Rose and the Everest and the Coolmore.

“They’re the three races where, once I can get him in that zone, just leave him alone a little bit. I thought 1100m was a little bit short for him, first off, I did feel, but that’s just how good he is.

“You know what, if someone said to me, can you win the Caulfield Guineas with this, it could happen. But you can’t do everything.

“He’s just a gun colt, and I’m very happy that Coolmore have backed him, and, yeah, he’s just fantastic.”

As for Blue Door, Bjorn Baker’s Group 3 winning filly was gallant in her second defeat of the season having come via The Rosebud.

“Very gallant. Got softened up early and still strong late. Got beaten by a very good colt,” her hoop Berry said.
