The all-in quote on Savvy Hallie to keep the wins coming this season in the Group 1 Surround Stakes on February 28 have firmed following the Brad Widdup-trained filly’s impressive all-the-way win in the 2026 Light Fingers Stakes results at Randwick on Saturday.

Improving on her first-up fourth at the Gold Coast on January 10, last year’s Group 2 Silver Shadow winner was perfectly rated by jockey Nash Rawiller who took advantage of the daughter of Hellbent’s barrier four draw to hit the front and lead from barrier to box in the Group 2 $300,000 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) on Apollo Stakes Day.
“Things fell apart at the Gold Coast for us, but she has responded great. She’s come home and turned up today after no trials, nice fillies’ race, I’m rapt,” Widdup told Sky Thoroughbred Central post-win.
“Good, positive ride (by Rawiller). That’s why we put these guys on. They’re the best, so nice to have him on. I haven’t used Nash a lot for no other reason than we can’t get him, so it was nice to get him.”
She held her front-running position all the way to the post eventually crossing 0.79 lengths clear of the beaten favourite Apocalyptic ($1.50F) who lost few admirers in a forgivable return from the Flight Stakes winner who was crunched for room at a crucial stage on the home straight.
“It surprised me how well she jumped. It was our last plan but also one I didn’t put a line through,” winning hoop Rawiller said of Savvy Hallie’s performance.
“Anything can happen in a race and there is nothing worse than being tied down by instructions. We were going to aim for the one/one and get her comfortable where we end up. After two strides it was pretty obvious where we were going to be.”
“I had enough confidence in her not to wait for them (on the home straight). I had all the favours so could afford to go at the top of the rise and make them chase me down. A few of them may have looked like they were coming at some stage in the race, but she was always going to find something in the last 100m.”
The underrated Annabel & Rob Neasham-trained Nepo Baby ($17) meanwhile ran out of her skin for third in her eye-catching Group race debut.
The next logical step for Savvy Hallie is now a rise to 1400m for a shot at the Group 1 $750,000 Surround Stakes back at the track in a fortnight’s time with Lady Shenandoah (2025) having completed the double last autumn.
“She’s dynamic at this sort of trip against her own age and sex,” Widdup said.
“We will probably go to the 1400 now.”
“She relaxes, she’s got a good brain, so I can’t see why not. We probably won’t get that sort of luxury (in the lead) over 1400. You try to picture races, how they’re going to turn out, and I’m happy with that. It was great.”
The all-in quote for Savvy Hallie to win the 2026 Surround Stakes at Ladbrokes.com.au has firmed in from $21 to $15 at time of publish.
Apocalyptic remains on the second line of Surround Stakes betting easing out slightly from $4.20 to $6 with her Light Fingers jockey Tommy Berry confident she’ll be better suited up in trip.
“It was always going to make it hard from the home turn onwards,” he said of her run today.
“The leader got a picnic there in front. That was always a possibility. I like the way she hit the line late. Will be better suited at the 1400m.”
