The Group 1 $1 million Neds Might And Power Stakes (2000m) – formerly the Caulfield Stakes – is one of three elite level races on the Caulfield Guineas Day card and features a stellar 10-horse field.
Heading the latest Might And Power Stakes odds at $2.20 through Ladbrokes.com.au is All Too Hard gelding Alligator Blood last seen successfully defending his title in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).
The evergreen veteran is fit fourth-up on the weekend chasing his first win over further than 1800m and is tipped to do so with plenty of support from the punters.
The ‘Gator has a bit of a cult status and the former Queenslander has his 33rd career start looking to add to his already impressive $6.87 million earnings.
His last 2000m assignment was in this race last year also off a win in the underwood when fifth only 2.25 lengths behind the since-retired hero Anamoe.
This year he looks the one to beat and should be on speed from barrier three with Tim Clark riding.
The danger occupying the second line of Might And Power Stakes betting at $4 is Just Fine from the same stable with the class European import looking for his fourth win from as many starts down under.
The former Queen-owned Sea The Stars six-year-old is riding a four-straight winning streak with the latest three of those seeing him unbeaten in Australia ahead of Saturday’s race.
He handled a notable rise in grade as the odds-on favourite relishing carrying just 50kg to a narrow win in race record time in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) on Epsom Day in Sydney a fortnight back.
Just Fine comes back 400m in distance, which he will either relish or find a bit sharp, and rises back up in the kilos carrying nine kilos more with 59kg at weight-for-age.
The weight is what could get the better of the potential Melbourne Cup-bound horse and bring his winning streak to an end.
Edward Cummings’ Group 1 winning mare Duais completes the single-figure fancies at $5.50 to return to her best.
It has been a long time between drinks for the now six-year-old daughter of Shamus Award who hasn’t been seen in the winner’s stall since she took out the Group 1 Australian Cup – Tancred Stakes double in March last year.
She was good running a couple of big races in Brisbane over the winter and caught the eye last time out only 1.2 lengths beaten when producing a big run late in the Underwood behind Alligator Blood.
The other standout hopeful is the Chris Waller-trained Linderman ($13) drawn the rails with Brazilian star Joao Moreira to ride.
The 2023 Might And Power Stakes is set to run as Caulfield Race 7 at 3:45pm (AEDT) on Saturday’s bumper 10-race card with the latest markets from Ladbrokes.com.au available by clicking here.
