Nominations for this season’s Group 1 $400,000 The Goodwood (1200m) feature 28 class sprinters vying for a spot in the Morphettville classic, final acceptances closing on Tuesday.

Of the potential runners, it is the local Gordon Richards-trained Gytrash dominating the pre-field The Goodwood odds at a current quote of $3.20 through Ladbrokes.com.au.

The flying Lope De Vega entire ran 10th behind upset winner Despatch as a three-year-old in last year’s The Goodwood results, but has gone from strength to strength over the past 12 months.

He beat home dual The Everest champion Redzel down the Flemington straight in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) back in February at big odds before proving that was no fluke with two more Group 1 placings in Melbourne.

The four-year-old was third to Bivouac in the Newmarket Handicap and second to Loving Gaby at The Valley in the William Reid during a simply outstanding autumn prep.

After a freshen-up, Gytrash returned home to Morphettville on April 18 and defeated three-time Group 1 winning mare Sunlight in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m).

The traditional lead-up to The Goodwood, Gytrash was a three-length winner in the RN Irwin and looks a huge hope of completing the double this weekend if accepted.

In an open top half of betting on The Goodwood nominations for 2020, there are a further three single-figure fancies including $5.50 second elect The Inevitable.

The Patrick Payne-trained Dundeel four-year-old comes into the race having won eight of his 13 starts, his latest victory being Randwick’s Silver Eagle (1300m) last October.

Unplaced behind Kolding with 12th in the $7.5 million Golden Eagle after that, he was also out of the money running eighth in the Newmarket Handicap.

First-up on ANZAC Day he put in an improved run in easier company in a 1000m handicap at Flemington carrying 60kg to a close second behind Prezado and looks well-weighted in The Goodwood with 56kg.

Winner of the 2018 The Goodwood, the Anthony Freedman-trained Santa Ana Lane is entered again two years on and is at $6.50 to score his second win in the event.

There has only ever been two dual The Goodwood winners with Mostyn (1894–95) and Musket Belle (1911–12), neither on non-successive years as Santa Ana Lane attempts this weekend.

The seven-year-old is a five-time Group 1 winner and is out to break a notable winning drought not having saluted since last year’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).

Runner-up to Nature Strip in that same race run on a Heavy (8) this April, Santa Ana Lane was last seen running sixth in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) and will appreciate getting back to his preferred distance in The Goodwood.

The Godolphin-raced 2019 Stradbroke winner Trekking ($8) rounds out the current nominees under $10 for the win before the likes of Robert Sangster Stakes runner-up Lyre ($12), class mare Sunlight ($12) and Mick Bell’s evergreen nine-year-old Jungle Edge ($15) coming off a Group 3 DC McKay Stakes win at the track represent the potential early value.
