The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Away Game made history as the eighth filly in 11 years to beat home the boys in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic results at blowout odds.
For the fourth straight season the fillies were on top in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast with Away Game joining Exhilarates (2019), Sunlight (2018) and Houtzen (2017) as the most recent female winners of the lucrative feature.
Like the Godolphin-raced Exhilarates last Queensland Summer Racing Carnival, Away Game is a beautifully bred daughter of Snitzel.
Already a stakes winner having taken out the Listed $125,000 Calaway Gal Stakes (1100m) at Doomben on December 18, the $425,000 buy increased her value as a potential broodmare into the millions with her MM Classic victory at career start number three.
Jockey Luke Currie celebrated his second Magic Millions Classic success after his dominant performance aboard the superstar Sunlight three years ago and timed his run to perfection on Away Game who went around at juicy odds of $41 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
“There’s not much to her but she’s definitely got some ability,” Currie said of Away Game after the race.
“I knew she was quality but there’s some pretty good two-year-olds. It’s hard to win any two-years-old race let alone the Magic Millions.
“It was one of the most satisfying moments I’ve had in my career flying home last time when Sunlight won, and I’ll be equally as satisfied when I’m flying home tomorrow.”
Jumping from barrier 12, Currie allowed the filly to settle just off the pace as a host of others went for the front with Lady Banff the eventual leader over Dusty Tycoon.
Away Game was creeping forward midrace around sixth in running, while the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained favourite Aim found himself shuffled back and caught on the inside.
Lady Banff led around the turn and onto the straight before Away Game let loose with her blistering turn of foot down the middle to burst clear and bolt home in a massive two length win.
Showing off incredible late speed, the Magic Millions Classic winner sprinted, picked up her rivals and very quickly put them away inside of the final furlong before holding them all the way to the post.
She defeated one of the four from the Snowden camp, fellow filly Stella Pauline ($17), who finished runner-up for the third time on the trot following her back-to-back seconds in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes behind Every Rose and the beaten Magic Millions Classic favourite Aim last start.
In third to round out the Magic Millions 2YO Classic trifecta was Conceited ($9.50) for last year’s winning trainer James Cummings, the Brazen Beau colt on the quick back-up after his second to Wisdom Of Water at the track in last Saturday’s Gold Nugget (1100m).
Away Game also picked up the Women’s in Racing Bonus earning an extra $325,000 for connections boosting her overall Magic Millions Classic prize to $1.5 million.
“It was a pretty easy watch for her,” co-trainer Maher said.
“It was a beautiful ride. Just a fantastic job.”
