In a major blow for connections of the ATC Oaks runner-up, Scarlet Dream will not get the chance to line-up against the colts and geldings in Eagle Farm Race 7 on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
After her luckless first-up seventh in the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) on May 18, the classy chestnut was saved for the Group 1 $600,000 Queensland Derby (2400m) with Newnham confident she would appreciate the roomier Eagle Farm track.
She bypassed last weekend’s Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben, but has now been forced out to the paddock having punctured her near girt after running into a fence.
Scarlet Dream was paying around $6 in the Queensland Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au before she was scratched.
In-form jockey Blake Shinn is now without a Queensland Derby ride.
The Scarlet Dream scratching has seen the John Sargent-trained Home Made gain a start in the set weights classic.
Improving each run, High Chaparral gelding Home Made jumped at $61 odds in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at Eagle Farm last time out on May 25.
He ran out of his skin to cross just 1.2 lengths back third behind the winner Fun Fact in that traditional Queensland Derby lead-up and is at a current quote of $34 to score an upset this afternoon.
Updated Queensland Derby betting is now led by the Phillip Stokes-trained Mr Quickie ($5.50 into $4.40) racing for the first time since finishing third as the beaten favourite in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) on May 11.
One time favourite, the Chris Waller-trained Nobu ($4.80) who Tommy Berry will ride from barrier 10 is now occupying the second line of the markets.
Waller’s filly Re Edit, on the quick back-up following her excellent third behind Kenenda in last Saturday’s Group 2 P.J. O’Shea Stakes (2200m), is the big Queensland Derby market mover.
Coming into barrier seven with James McDonald booked for the ride, the progressive daughter of Camelot has been backed right in from $10 to $5 coming back against her own age this afternoon.
