Victorian trainer Ciaron Maher stands to win close to $4 million this weekend on the Gold Coast should talented three-year-old colt Star Fall make the trip to contest the Magic Millions 3yo Guineas (1400m).
Originally Maher’s hopes rested entirely in the hands of jockey Michael Walker, who will ride $8.00 chance Dubious in the $2 million 2yo Classic (1200m). After impressing a fortnight ago over 1100m at Caulfield however, the stable might have doubled their chances by accepting Star Fall into the second of the two feature races.
“I have accepted with him but I’m not sure whether he’s going up yet,” Maher told Racing.com on Monday.
“I’ll just have a look at the field and work it out from there.”
The original plan for the son of Zoustar was a start in a sprint race in Sydney on Saturday, but after showing strong signs in the stable last week, the prize-money on offer was too good to pass up.
’He’s very impressive,’’ Maher said following Star Fall’s win on Boxing Day.
‘’They reeled off some good sectionals. He was at the beach the next day and seems in pretty good order.’’
Among a 12-horse field in his last start at Caulfield, Star Fall peaked at the midway point of the race to run the fastest average speed of the journey. A step back up to 1200m looked to be the next challenge, but after placing fifth over 1400m at Flemington last June, the 2yo Classic distance certainly won’t be beyond the $350,000 yearling purchase.
“His trial was pretty good. I don’t think it was the quickest time but I think it was the way he did it was probably more impressive.” Maher said.
“He’s an impressive horse who will benefit from the run. He’s a big, goofy horse, but he’s got some raw talent there.”
Star Fall is currently on the second line of betting with Ladbrokes.com.au at $9.00 behind Chris Munce’s Boomsara ($3.50) and the Tony Gallan trained Outback Barbie ($2.80).
