Champion trainer Chris Waller has seen two of his most promising mares finish first and second in the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
The heavy track always looked well-suited to swoopers on the day, and race-winner Invincibella and runner-up Noire made full use of the sticky conditions.
With both runners entering at around the $9.00 mark with Ladbrokes, it was a tremendous result for the stable as Invincibella now looks primed for another Group 1 run.
The five-year old mare raced on from barrier 6 to storm down the outside alongside her stablemate, leaving punters who backed the short-favourite Champagne Cuddles disappointed once again.
Running two-wide from the rail, Champagne Cuddles looked to have the race won with 200m to go, and with plenty of clean air in front, it was a surprise to see Waller’s mares steal position.
Jockey Hugh Bowman told Sky Racing after the race that Invincibella was always a chance once she saw daylight.
“She traveled very well, I waited as long as I could for something to happen”.
“Had a lot of ground to make up, but once she got a sniff of victory she really got herself together and hit the line well” Bowman said.
Champagne Cuddles left well off the inside, but a move off the fence with 250m left to go may have cost her.
As for Noire, according to Waller this might just be the beginning of something special.
“She’s a year younger than Invincibella, the best from her is yet to come. The beauty of the spring is so many options” Waller said after the race.
It may have come down to a tight photo finish, but Invincibella now stands a chance to run in the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) on Golden Rose Stakes day before progressing to a Group 1 feature later in her prep.
“I’d love to see her get one, it’s not really a Group 1 horse but because she’s become so consistent she wouldn’t be out of place in a mares Group 1 over the carnival” Bowman said following Saturday’s win.
