The additional nomination of The Monstar has boosted the entries to ten for the 2018 Group 2 $200,000 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Scone trainer Brett Cavanough added The Monstar to the Missile Stakes nominations after the Australian Turf Club extended the deadline when only nine horse’s names were on the original list on Monday morning.
The Monstar, who will turn eight on the 1st of August on Wednesday, finished fourth at his most recent run in the Listed $160,000 GDSC Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton on July 11 and was a winner three starts back in the Group 2 $175,000 Moreton Cup (1200m) at the Sunshine Coast on June 2.
Ladbrokes.com.au added The Monstar to the betting for the Missile Stakes at $31 with the James Cummings trained Kementari as the $2.25 favourite ahead of the Magic Millions 3yo Guineas winner Pierata at $4.50 while the 2017 Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign is marked as a $9 chance.
A first class performance from Kementari, She Will Reign or the Greg HIckman trained Pierata could see one of them make a case to fill one of the two remaining slots for the $13m The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 13.
Godolphin Australia’s General Manager Vin Cox said that the giant racing establishment was in no hurry to lock Kementari in a slot for the The Everest but would keep negotiations open with the remaining two slot holders who are yet to select a runner.
“I’ve been talking to a number of slot-holders over the last little while and we’ve always said we’re not prepared to look too early,” Cox told The Australian.
Pre-post betting for the 2018 Missile Stakes at Ladbrokes.com.au: $2.25 Kementari, $4.50 Pierata, $6.50 Music Magnate, $7.50 Egyptian Symbol, Showtime, $9 She Will Reign, $16 Lanciato, $21 Takedown, $31 The Monstar, $51 Boss Lane.
