One race before Winx looks to make history with a 17th Group 1 win in the George Ryder Stakes the Golden Slipper Day action at Rosehill on Saturday features the 2018 Ranvet Stakes, tips and updated odds on the weight-for-age showdown found below.
There are just eight remaining stayers in the field for Rosehill Race 4 at 2:05pm (AEDT) after the early withdrawal of The Taj Mahal (5) from the Group 1 $700,000 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).
Odds-on in Ranvet Stakes betting having returned in top order this autumn is the Darren Weir-trained French import Gailo Chop paying $1.85 in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
He won his opening two starts this campaign before the close second as the beaten favourite in Flemington’s Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) and is now out to win back the love of the punters.
Gailo Chop is right up to this having outstanding form at the distance and is the proven mudlark with a three-from-three record on Heavy going, which he is likely to see for his Sydney debut here.
Who else best handles the wet is going to have a big impact on the Ranvet Stakes tips this autumn and the bookies are saying that will be the Nick Olive-trained mare Single Gaze ($5).
She’s always honest, is Saturday’s early market mover drawn the rails and under two lengths beaten when fifth in the Australian Cup.
So will the best two in the Ranvet Stakes odds run the quinella or is there an upset pending in the Tancred Stakes lead-up from the likes of Lindsay Park’s upset Australian Cup winner Harlem ($9.50) or even Prized Icon ($11) on the quick back-up after an Ajax Stakes sixth last Saturday at the track?
1st
#1 Gailo Chop ($1.85)
There’s no value in the Ranvet Stakes favourite but he’s too good to go past especially on a Heavy track. Yet to be beaten on mud going (3:3-0-0) and in this small field he can turn the tables on his Australian Cup conqueror and get back to winning form. Versatile and should go the Sydney way without a worry, possibly even leading all-the-way over his pet distance (12:6-1-0) and will take some beating.
2nd
#2 Classic Uniform ($13)
Double-figures on this Gary Moore-trained Al Maher five-year-old is generous. Don’t think he will challenge Gailo Chop, but has enough form to suggest a top two run at a price. Always hard to knock anything around Winx and his lead-up was a third to her in the Chipping Norton over the mile. Has won over 2000m so third-up should enjoy the extra distance. Beat Happy Clapper home over 2000m at Randwick in October and also has the wet track form that could prove the difference (6:1-2-1).
3rd
#8 Single Gaze ($5)
Single Gaze is a very good staying mare, proven time and time again by her brave runs including the Caulfield Cup second in the spring. Was only 1.85 lengths back fifth in the Australian Cup and was a two-time runner-up behind Hartnell and Gailo Chop respectively before that this time in. Has form at Rosehill including her 2016 Vinery Stud Stakes victory at this track / distance and has been thereabouts on rain-affected tracks.
