Taking place one race before the Group 1 $1 million Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot Racecourse, this year’s Group 2 $500,000 W.A. Guineas (1600m) is set to jump at 4:15pm (local) on the opening feature meeting of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.
It is a full field of potential young stayers and the current WA Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is a two horse affair.
Money Maher has won three of his four starts this preparation including a two length romp home on November 11 in the Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m).
The Daniel & Ben Pearce-trained Al Maher colt is the narrow $4.20 favourite in WA Guineas betting, just ahead of the impressive filly Perfect Jewel ($4.80) who gets the chance to atone for her first career loss last time out with William Pike coming back aboard.
Darren McAuliffe’s Sebring filly Art Series ($8) who won last Saturday’s Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes at the track / distance and the Grant & Alana Williams-trained son of Pierro Arcadia Prince ($9) shape-up as the dangers according to the bookies, but there are generous odds on offer for plenty of other up-and-comers with claims on the title.
So can the best in betting get the job done or is there an upset WA Guineas result pending from the likes of Fairetha Stakes runner-up Achernar Star ($13) who Craig Williams is over to ride or even Steve Wolfe’s untapped So Secret gelding Three Secrets ($20) who has purposely been kept fresh for the Group 2 feature?

#3 Money Maher ($4.20)
Hard to knock or go past this favourite who was ultra-impressive in the Fairetha Stakes last time out. That’s been a good guide to the Guineas in WA in recent years and this colt’s two length win over the 1400m suggested he’ll appreciate the 1600m even more. Presents fit and barrier over the distance is a non-issue. Was closing fast off a hot pace last time and looks the one to beat again here if the boys hold out the fillies.
2nd
#1 Achernar Star ($13)
Nice price offered on this Simon Miller-trained son of Gingerbread Man who won at Ascot over 1200m two back before finishing second best in the Fairetha Stakes. Drawn better here for the rematch in gate three and the booking of Craig Williams who is over for the Perth rides is a big plus. Needs to chase home the same horse and show ability at 1600m, but looks a genuine chance at double-figures in an open affair.
3rd
#14 Perfect Jewel ($4.80)
The fillies have been impressive in Perth this summer and of them think that Perfect Jewel is the one to stick with. She won three straight before her fourth in the Burgess Queen Stakes. Jockey change that day, but Pike returns for the big one. She didn’t race in last weekend’s event against her own kind, saved for this, so the stable has confidence.
Now is the time to get in on the top Perth Summer Racing odds and lock in our WA Guineas 2017 tips at the right price this weekend through Ladbrokes.com.au.
