Tycoon Tara Wins Tattersall’s Tiara 2017 in Upset

The gun recent record of upset Tattersall’s Tiara winners continued at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday when the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Tycoon Tara won the season’s last Group 1 race thanks to a brilliant ride by hoop Kerrin McEvoy.

McEvoy celebrated his second win in the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival feature in three years, having previously ridden the Ciaron Maher-trained Srikandi to victory at the Gold Coast in 2015.

This year’s edition of the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) took place at Doomben Racecourse and taken out by $19 shot Tycoon Tara who jumped at a similar price to last year’s champion Miss Cover Girl ($21 in 2016).

Tycoon Tara became the first six-year-old Tattersall’s Tiara winner since the race’s inauguration in 1996 after improving on a lead-up seventh behind Prompt Response in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m).

Gai Waterhouse’s Dane Ripper winning filly Prompt Response ($8) was second past the post in the Tattersall’s Tiara quinella on Saturday in the rematch, while the $2.70 race favourite endured a horror run with In Her Time eventually running a length away third.

McEvoy had Tycoon Tara, who hadn’t won a race since the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) last September, straight to the front after she jumped well from her favourable barrier three draw.

Tycoon Tara made Tatt’s Tiara history as the race’s first six-year-old winner

The mare led all-the-way for the upset Group 1 victory, McEvoy’s ninth elite level winning ride of the season.

“Peter [Snowden] said just be positive on her and I was happy the way she was travelling at the 600 metres and even happier at the 400 metres,” McEvoy told Racing Queensland post-win on Saturday.

“She can be a bit funny in the barriers but I had a good handler with us today.”

Even co-trainer Peter Snowden admitted he was somewhat surprised by the Tattersall’s Tiara results, having been unsure the mare was still up to the class.

“She was going well last preparation when she won a couple of Black-Type races,” he said.

“I thought when she was going so well then that there was a good race in her and decided to aim for the winter and this race in particular.

“She’s always had the ability to win a race like this at set weights.

“I was a bit disappointed with her performance last run and was ready to pull the pin until I saw her last week.”

There’s a chance Tycoon Tara could retire post her Group 1 Tiara win with Snowden admitting future racing plans with the now $1.17 million earner were up in the air.

“I’m not sure about her future. She’s a rising seven-year-old and winning a Group 1 is a nice way to hang your hat on,” he said.
