The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Sydney raider Northwest Passage is the headline nomination taken for the Tasmanian Derby 2017 running this Friday in the Apple Isle.
The action of the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival continues across the weekend including Hobart Cup Day on Sunday and Bow Mistress Stakes Night on Friday.
The key Hobart support act on Friday is the $100,000 Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m), which attracted eleven early entries at nomination stage.
A host of interstate-trained three-year-olds are nominated to make the trip south for the showdown including the in-form So You Think gelding Northwest Passage.
The beautifully bred youngster has won three of his four career starts to date including the Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m) on January 22.
Northwest Passage is now sure to dominate Tasmanian Derby betting at Ladbrokes.com.au to complete the double this weekend in his first look at the 2200m.
The distance looks a definite non-issue after the up-and-comer thrashed his rivals by over seven lengths last time out with Adam Hyeronimus in the saddle.
The other best out of the Hobart Guineas nominated for a rematch in the Tasmanian Derby field this weekend is the third-placed Trusted Warrior for the Campania-based training duo of Chris Cook & Imogen Miller.
The Trusting gelding was well-beaten by the tearaway winner last start and is yet to win from his six previous starts at Hobart Racecourse to date including his fifth to Hot Dipped two back in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) on January 6.
Along with Northwest Passage the only other last start winner nominated for Friday’s black-type is the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained I Ain’t The One from Mornington in Victoria.
The son of High Chaparral broke his maiden status at career start number four only on Sunday over 1755m at Geelong.
He would be on a short seven day turnaround if accepted into the Tasmanian Derby field chasing successive wins.
Other in-form visitors from outside of Tasmania in the mix include the Patrick Payne-trained Good Journey gelding Matamanoa who ran fourth over 2040m at Moonee Valley last time out and the Mick Price-trained Shadow Prince.
Shadow Prince has won just one of his 10 career runs so far, the latest over 2025m at Cranbourne back in December, and is out to improve on his mid-field fifth to Northwest Passage in the Hobart Guineas.
