Running as Gosford Race 5 at 3:50pm (AEDT), the $150,000 Listed Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) might not have the numbers but there is still class among the ranks.
All but one of the six horses engaged in the showdown are under $10 to win in the latest Gosford Gold Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au including the $2.60 favourite and 59kg top weight Red Excitement.
Gerald Ryan’s in-form seven-year-old comes off a string of good spring – summer runs including a last start Randwick victory on Boxing Day in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m).
Red Excitement posted a three length winning margin, proving the step-up to 2100m today should be a non-issue, and doesn’t need to improve much to beat this field.
The other major players looking at Gosford Cup betting are early market mover Sense Of Occasion ($3.20) coming off a first-up win in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 17 and the rails-drawn Malice ($5) for John O’Shea who ran fourth in the Summer Cup.
So will the best in betting be first past the post in the Gosford Gold Cup results or is there value tipping the likes of Joe Pride’s last start mile and a half winner Destiny’s Kiss ($6) or Summer Cup runner-up Foreign Prince ($8.50) for the upset?
1st
#4 Malice ($5)
Malice jumps from the inside barrier and deserves another shot after struggling in his Summer Cup fourth last time out. Before that won the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill and he looks well weighted on 56.5kg here. Has the ability and it is a small, open field. Respect.
2nd
#1 Red Excitement ($2.60)
Adam Hyeronimus stays on this ultra-consistent veteran who has the last start Summer Cup win by the big margin. First look at further than 2000m, but that won’t be a problem. Extra kilos is a query, but is a class galloper coming off a soft victory.
3rd
#2 Destiny’s Kiss ($6)
Pride’s eight-year-old has won two of his past six, both of those wins at 2400m. Two back was sixth in the Summer Cup (2000m) and prefers more metres. Back down in distance for this, but back from 59kg to 57.5kg and two weeks between runs again. Could find this a bit sharp, but can’t be discounted.
