The Neville Parnham-trained Bass Strait jumps from barrier one wearing the No. 1 in the Carbine Club of W.A. Stakes 2016 field on Railway Stakes Day this weekend in Perth.
One of the key support acts on the Ascot race card, this summer’s $100,000 Listed Carbine Club of W.A. Stakes (1400m) is set to run as Race 6 of 9 at 3:35pm (local time) on Saturday.
The set weights plus penalties sprint has attracted a final field of a dozen gallopers including Holy Roman Emperor seven-year-old veteran Bass Strait, formerly prepared by the Lindsay Park stable.
The warhorse gets the run of the race from the inside alley with Steven Parnham continuing associations.
Bass Strait has won just one of his 14 Ascot starts and from 10 runs over the 1400m is yet to finish in the money so is expected to start at longer odds in markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
He did however catch the eye at the track last weekend running second and beaten only a length by the winner Scales Of Justice – who backs-up in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) this Saturday – in the Group 3 R.J. Peters Stakes (1500m) as a $101 roughie.
Also coming off a second at the track last weekend is the Grant & Alana Williams-trained Beneteau four-year-old Universal Law.
He lined-up in a Benchmark 72+ over the mile and was narrowly beaten by Pounamu carrying 58kg.
For the Carbine Club of W.A. Stakes he gets back in distance and weight carrying 55kg from the outside alley (12) with Hong Kong jockey Douglas Whyte to ride.
Also out wide are his stablemate Coming Back (11) and William Pike’s mount Special Delivery (10).
Glenn Smith stays in the saddle of High Chaparral five-year-old Coming Back who also lined-up last weekend in stakes’ company.
A winner of back-to-back races over 1200m earlier this season, Coming Back caught the eye rising in class when fourth to Vega Magic in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m).
He is out over 300m extra on Saturday but has an outstanding 1400m record of three wins and three seconds from six starts that he’ll be out to add to fourth-up.
The Geoff Durrant & Joe Miller-trained Special Delivery drops from 58kg to 55kg second-up having just his second run back from a year long spell.
The galloper finished eighth in the Railway Stakes to Good Project last Perth Summer Racing Carnival before spending 12 months on the sidelines.
He returned on November 6 at York over 1500m and was narrowly beaten by Django when second and will strip fitter for the run.
Higher up the ratings are the likes of the Simon Miller-trained Zarantz and Team Williams’ third runner Chocolate Holic in barriers nine and eight respectively.
Brad Parnham rides Choisir six-year-old Zarantz who comes off a first-up sixth behind Group 1 winner Perfect Reflection in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) a fortnight back.
Chocolate Holic also comes off a sixth when under three lengths beaten in last Saturday’s Listed Ascot Gold Cup (1800m).
He drops from 58kg to 57.5kg and has former Perth-based jockey Damien Oliver riding this weekend.
