Peter & Paul Snowden and connections of Newgate who sponsored the opener on Epsom Handicap Day in Sydney on Saturday scored the quinella in the Breeders’ Plate 2015 with the very impressive Capitalist beating home stablemate Detective with ease at Royal Randwick.

Purchased for $165,000 as a yearling, the nicely-bred Written Tycoon colt Capitalist jumped the odds-on favourite in the $150,000 Listed Newgate Breeders’ Plate (1000m) after a speedy trial win at the track on September 21 by two lengths.
He bought exactly that form to the races for his debut and gave jockey Blake Shinn an armchair ride, cruising to the front 200m from the line to win running away without ever hitting full stride.
The John O’Shea-trained Cohesion was first out of the gates and up front early racing to the lead from Caprera before his stablemate Samadoubt raced up the rails to lead them around after settling.
Tracking the leader in second was One Stryke with Cohesion third from Caprera who remained in touch settling fourth.
Brenton Avdulla’s mount Samadoubt lead around the turn for home before Team Snowden’s Snitzel colt Detective moved up looking for the split as the backmarkers joined in.
Capitalist ($1.70) and Shinn quickly made their way onto the scene over the closing few hundred metres, the eventual winner cruising to an easy lead to beat home Detective ($10) by a few lengths with the James Cummings-trained Prized Icon ($31) running an eye-catching third.
A roughie hope with the bookmakers, Cummings’ More Than Ready colt Prized Icon lifted from his trial form to show dramatic improvement on a seventh of nine runners in his sole hit-out.
It was all about the winner however who did it very easy in the end in an effortless and professional performance having been in complete control throughout before balancing up exactly as he did in his lead-up trial.
A small horse in stature, Capitalist is ticking plenty of early boxes and looked in a league of his own in the Breeders’ Plate with plenty left in the tank.
“What an outstanding performance,” winning hoop Shinn said.
“He’s an outstanding two-year-old.
“They’ve found a really smart horse here.
“He’s just so relaxed and that’s his greatest attribute I think, his demeanour.
“He just takes everything in his stride, a real professional and that’s going to take him a long way.”
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Vancouver (2014) won last year’s Breeders’ Plate as a two-year-old before coming before coming back in the autumn to win the world’s richest race for juveniles, the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).
Connections of Capitalist are likely to target the 2016 Golden Slipper early next year with the horse purchased as a future stallion prospect, but the lucrative $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast in Queensland in January is first on the agenda.
“We set out to purchase some beautiful colts that would hopefully become stallion prospects and that’s a nice start,” James Harron from Newgate said.
“I think a short spell is in order before we head to the Magic Millions in January.”
Co-trainer Peter Snowden agreed the Magic Millions was the most likely target in the summer, despite early discussions being to “go for broke” if the horse showed good early ability.
“He really surprised me,” Snowden said.
“The ease in which he won, the time he’s run.
“I think we might rethink, set some realist goals.
“The Magic Millions is worth $2 million and that’s definitely on the radar.
“He’s a very impressive horse.”
