Popular mare Royal Descent has completed a perfect racing return at Royal Randwick this afternoon; producing a huge turn of foot in the final straight to beat Pornichet to the line in the featured Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m).

Jumping from the gates well, Sydney Premiership-winning jockey Hugh Bowman led the Redoute’s Choice mare forward and settled in prime position on the heels of early leaders Zaratone, Messene and Pornichet, who set a reasonable tempo towards the turn.

Rounding onto the final straight with a clear racing line, Bowman allowed Royal Descent to steadily spool up before mounting an impressive sprint over the final 300m; running neck and neck with Pornichet but managing to draw a length clear to post the impressive first-up win.

Trainer Chris Waller has a big opinion of Royal Descent and was absolutely thrilled with her first-up performance to win the 2015 Warwick Stakes.

“She’s the last horse I would call a non-winner, and I know that’s what her form suggests but you wouldn’t get a horse that tries harder than her,” Waller said after the race.

“She’s just been so gallant in big races, almost breaking weight carrying records in Epsoms and things like that but she’s a super star.

“It’s the best she’s come back in terms of the way she looks, she just looks so strong.

“I thought that might have been just against her a little bit but she’s had the two trials and trialled well and just a class act. She’s in for a good prep and that’s a good way to start.”

Bowman delivered a typically impressive performance aboard Royal Descent for success in the 2015 Warwick Stakes and was quick to heap the praise on the consistent mare.

“You’ve only got to look through her record to see there’s a lot of places at the highest level,” Bowman said.

“Her consistency probably penalises her in those big handicaps because she’s weighted up to the best and has been narrowly defeated a couple of times.

“To get a win, although it’s a Group 2 against this calibre of horse it’s just no surprise and I’m just so pleased for Chris and the stable.

“I got a good run and I was always going to, but Chris had the mare in tip-top order today although I think she’ll improve with the run.

“My biggest concern was the firmer footing because she does like a bit of cut in the ground but she gave me a really good field going to the gates, I knew she was switched on and on the game.

“It all fell into place.”
