Classy mare Brook Road has delivered trainer Kris Lees another feature success at Canterbury over the weekend; producing an impressive performance to beat a very handy field of short distance specialists to the line in the July Sprint (1100m).
Brook Road has posted an impressive six wins and four minors through only fourteen career starts so far, and while being back into favouritism in the hours leading up to the July Sprint, was expected by many to play back-up to a showdown between notable sprinters Burbero and Kencella.
After jumping from the barriers well, Brenton Avdulla immediately settled Brook Road at the rear of the small field of seven; allowing the race’s early leaders to press forward and string out the group along the rails.
Finding the final straight with plenty to do, Brook Road took only a few lengths to find top gear and quickly powered forward; comfortably overcoming the lead pack and extended to gap to hit the line close to three lengths in the clear of Burbero; Kencella maintaining for third.
Lees was thrilled with Brook Road’s performance for success in the 2015 July Sprint; in what figured as her second win in only three starts this time.
“There’s two sides to her and when the right one comes out she’s a very good horse,” Lees said after the race.
“The speed suited her and Brenton rode her perfectly.
“Her first-up win was excellent and I’m sure the figures out of this will be pretty good given the genuine tempo.”
Avdulla delivered a typically polished performance aboard Brook Road in the 2015 July Sprint, and believes the best is yet to come for the rising five-year-old this time in.
“They mightn’t be the best sprinters in the land but there was a bit of class in that race and plenty of pace,” Avdulla said.
“For a mare to give them a start and still beat them is always a good sign but the fact she was able to chase and still kick is quite impressive.”
Brook Road offered Ladbrokes.com.au punters great value for money; jumping at a quote of $3.30 for success.
