Roger James’s Cox Plate fancy Silent Achiever is clear favourite to add to her nice second-up record by winning Saturday’s 2014 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse.
The six-year-old daughter of O’Reilly is back across the Tasman from New Zealand for another spring down under and pays $3.20 through Ladbrokes.com.au to take out the $400,000 Group 1 Hyland Race Colours Underwood Stakes (1800m).
Punters that fancy the four time Group 1 winner however are best to back her at Ladbrokes in their Best Tote + 20% markets back again for this season’s majors!
Last time out Silent Achiever, drawn in barrier three for the Underwood with Damien Oliver to ride, kicked off her campaign in good order running fourth to Dissident in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).
Dissident’s trainer Peter Moody opted not to accept for the Underwood however instead saving the in-form four-year-old for the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes on September 28 leaving Silent Achiever with one less rival to defeat in the weight-for-age feature on the weekend.
She dominated the WFA autumn races in Sydney winning the Ranvet Stakes – The BMW double and is well liked to do the same this season as she heads towards a run in either the Caulfield Cup (October 18) or Cox Plate (October 25) and then possibly the iconic Melbourne Cup over the two miles at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.
Following Silent Achiever in the Underwood Stakes betting markets are then four others under $10 to win with:
#2 Foreteller ($4.60) – Chris Waller-trained eight-year-old is a veteran but racing in top form this time in backing up from a fourth in the PB Lawrence to run third, beaten just over a length by The Cleaner in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes. That was a cracker run over the mile and with winning form up to 2000m the bookies believe he’s a better shot stepping up over 1800m this weekend.
#4 The Offer ($6) – Gai Waterhouse’s current Melbourne Cup favourite the Montjeu six-year-old is second-up and also coming via the Group 2 Dato from September 6. A genuine stayer having won the Sydney Cup over 3200m by four lengths in the autumn he was far from disgraced when fifth, under two lengths off the winner there and so improvement is expected second-up over the extra metres at a track he’s yet to win at.
#9 Stipulate ($6.50) – Early market mover having been backed in already from $5.70, David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Dansili gelding returned with a win over 1700m here in the Listed Heatherlie Handicap carrying 56.5kg. Gets 1800m, his maximum distance win to date, and the same track here but under WFA conditions so up to 59kg with Dwayne Dunn riding from the outside barrier (10).
#7 Star Rolling ($9) – First-up Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes winner over 1400m here has winning form up to 2000m and was close in the Dato when sixth only 1.85 lengths away from The Cleaner. Extra distance suits this one too and the track holds no fears (4-1-1-1).
Following at more generous odds but still with genuine claims for an upset Underwood Stakes result are then the likes of Lidari ($11) with the rails run for jockey Luke Nolen and last year’s Cox Plate runner-up Happy Trails ($13) who came off an eerily similar prep last year to run a close fourth in last year’s Underwood Stakes.
