Heaven’s Riches has recorded a remarkable upset victory in the Group 3 2012 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m) at Morphetville today.
Paying $151.00 at bookmaker.com.au, the Robbie Laing-trained colt produced a sensational effort in the straight to finish ahead of Alcohol and race favourite Cornell.
It is just the second victory of the three-year-old’s career and he was untouched by the punters prior to the race.
One of four Laing-trained horses in the race, Laing admitted he was surprised by the victory.
“I gave three of them away and I thought where’s Heaven’s Riches and I looked at the outside and he was coming home very well,” Laing said.
“We ran him in a couple of short races early doors and I thought he’s bloody hopless this horse.
“He sticks really well though and he charges home.”
The Melbourne based trainer said the son of Danerich would remain in the South Australian capital for the rest of the Adelaide carnival.
While the punters and the bookmakers refused to give Heaven’s Riches a chance, jockey Michael Walker was confident leading into the race.
“He gave me a good feel,” Walker said.
“I got back to the fence and he wanted to travel a bit…it’s not many times during the race when you think if I get him out I’m going to win.
“But that’s what I was thinking the whole way.”
